Featured Faculty & Staff Member

Ellen Downer

Ellen Downer Ellen is in her 20th year of teaching in the social studies department, but her CJ connection dates back to 1982 when her daughter Martha began her freshman year. Ellen's son John entered CJ in 1985, and both are now counted among the ranks of proud CJ alumni.

Ellen graduated from The College of St Rose in Albany, N.Y. in 1966 with a degree in Social Studies Education. After four years of teaching in junior high schools in New York and Louisiana, Ellen left teaching to be a full time mom. With the idea of returning to the classroom, Ellen began work on a master's degree at Wright State University in the early 1990's, earning her Master of Humanities degree in 1996.

Impressed with the education that her children had received at CJ, Ellen applied for a teaching position and began working at CJ in 1992. Throughout the last 20 years, she has taught freshman World Cultures in addition to American Studies, Child Psych and Sociology. Since 2000, Ellen has served as chair of the social studies department and has been the faculty rep to the Co-Educators parent group at CJ since 1993.

When not in the classroom, Ellen enjoys traveling and being outdoors; walking, playing tennis, and biking are some of her favorite activities. If bad weather brings her indoors, she enjoys reading a good book. Anyone who knows Ellen knows that she is a die hard Cincinnati Reds fan.

Ellen lives in Kettering and is a communicant at St Albert the Great Catholic Church.
