Two Enrichment Opportunities at CJ

CJ will welcome two very special sets of guests to our Dayton campus this week and during the week that follows Easter Break (April 6-13). Please encourage students to help us extend a warm Eagles welcome should your son or daughter meet and greet our visitors in the days ahead.

Sr. Mary Diana Dreger Visits Tomorroow

On the morning of Friday, March 30, Sister Mary Diana Dreger -- a Dominican nun and medical doctor from Tennessee -- will speak with some of our science students as well as all freshmen and sophomores during their homeroom periods.

In addition to living a vowed religious life, Sr. Mary Diana also works as a primary care provider, serves as an assistant clinical professor of medicine at Vanderbilt University, and moonlights as a guest lecturer. We are fortunate to have the chance to expose our students to her expertise and unique perspective. More about Sr. Mary Diana >

Mayor, City Commissioner to Welcome Students from Germany

We are also fortunate to be able to once again participate in a student exchange involving high schoolers from Jakob Fugger Gymnasium in Augsberg, Germany. Twenty German students will stay with 18 CJ host families during the exchange -- sponsored by Dayton Sister Cities -- from Tuesday, April 10 to Friday, April 20.

Mayor Gary Leitzell and City Commissioner Matt Joseph will join Dan Meixner, president, and myself on Monday, April 16 to formally welcome our international guests during a 9 a.m. reception in the library. Following the reception, Jakob Fugger teachers and students will tour school and visit various classes.

A special thanks to our CJ host families and to Tony Ricciuto, social studies teacher and member of Dayton Sister Cities, for coordinating this exciting enrichment opportunity.

Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have questions about either of these upcoming events.

MINISTRY & SERVICE

One of the final activities for the Senior Justice project is the Day of Silence on Tuesday, April 3. All students, faculty, and staff have the opportunity to spend the day in silence in solidarity with victims of human trafficking. The men, women and children who are victimized and held captive have no voice for their welfare or freedom.

Students may choose to  be silent for the school day -- classes, study halls, homeroom and lunch -- as part of a Lenten sacrifice to remember and pray for those victims. Seniors are asking that students who choose to be silent take time to create and wear a sign with information about human trafficking and the statement, "I choose to be silent today in solidarity with all victims of human trafficking."

Seniors will send an email message with directions to all students. There will be time on Monday before and after school for students to prepare signs from 7:25 to 7:55 a.m. and from 3:05 to 3:35 p.m. in room 351. Materials for the signs and facts for the signs will be provided. WIth questions, please email Lisa Colbert, religion teacher.

HEALTH CLINIC

Tips for Fighting the Flu Season
If your child has a fever, vomiting, or diarrhea, we recommend that he or she not return to school until 24 hours after the symptoms subside. This helps control the spread of germs.

Here are some simple things we can all do to prevent the spread of germs and viruses:
  • Wash your hands frequently with soap and water.
  • Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you sneeze or cough.
  • Don't share glasses, cups, or utensils.
  • Clean the mouthpiece of your telephone weekly with a disinfecting wipe.
  • Replace your toothbrush after completing a course of antibiotics.
  • When in doubt, call your doctor for more advice.

For more information about the flu, visit the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Web site >

Religion 11 Parent Days

Parents are invited into the classroom today for an activity and discussion on Unit VI: Racism. In preparation for this class, it is recommended that parents review the unit notes.

There is no preparation required; however, students and parents will be asked to share some of their past experiences with the class related to these topics. Details >

Featured Faculty & Staff Member

Lisa Colbert

Colbert, Lisa Lisa Colbert has taught religion for more than 30 years, about 20 of which have been at CJ. She grew up in Hollywood, Fla. and attended Catholic schools, graduating from Madonna Academy. After earning a bachelor's degree in Religious Studies/Psychology, she returned to teach high school theology and serve as director of campus ministry and retreats at her alma mater until 1992 when she moved with her family to Dayton.

Since then, Lisa has served CJ primarily as a teacher in the religion department and, over the years, as a member of the adult ministry and service support team, a Kairos leader, a Marianist LIFE moderator, and a religion department chairperson. Currently, she continues to serve on the adult ministry and service support team and on MIT (Mission Integration Team).

Through her work for the Marianist Province of the United States and with the mission integration effectiveness visiting teams, Lisa has had the opportunity to visit over half of the Marianist schools in the Province and feels that CJ is the best of the 20 or so schools (even though she acknowledges she is a little partial).

One role that Lisa is most proud of is being the mother of four former, current and future CJ students: Meghan Colbert Mitman '03, Caitlin '13, Sean '15 and Erin '17. Lisa, her husband Tim, and their children have been active members in their parish and have recently become part of the St. Chris parish community.
