Greetings!

 

Enjoy the works of your favorite poets as they are performed on stage by 24 CJ students during the annual, school-wide Poetry Out Loud contest tonight at 7 p.m. in the auditorium.

 

One finalist will earn the right to represent CJ and compete for prizes at the state championship contest in Columbus. State champs can then advance to the National Finals in Washington, D.C this spring. The Eagles have been represented at nationals in two of the last four years.

 

This event is free and all are welcomed to attend. See you there!

Stang Symposium Update: Through the combined efforts of students and with the support of community members, CJ was able to donate $750 to help raise awareness and fight the global injustice of human trafficking.

 

Indoor Track: Two Eagle athletes took top honors in the long jump and triple jump events at the prestigious University of Kentucky High School Invitational last weekend. 

 

Science Fair: Seventeen students qualified to compete in the Montgomery County Science Fair on Saturday, March 3 at the University of Dayton.

 

Alter Idol: Congrats to all five CJ students who competed in the Alter Idol competition on Saturday. Waltaevia Jones and Caitlin Pearn finished in the top five.

 

Performing Arts: Twelve students competed in this year's OMEA District 12 Solo and Ensemble Adjudicated event at Stebbins High School on February 11.

Club Picture Days  

The yearbook staff is sponsoring two Club Picture Days on Wednesday, Feb. 29 and Wednesday, March 7. Easterling will be taking photos during the late-start block period in the gym on both days.

  

Students involved with clubs are encouraged to arrive five to 10 minutes before their club's scheduled picture time, and should wait in the cafeteria until called.

AP Test Fees Due Thursday, March 1

AP testing fees and forms are due Thursday, March 1. It is important to have all fees in on time so that the guidance office can order the correct number of tests. A late fee of $25 per test will be assessed after the March 1 deadline.

Ride the Spirit Bus to Saturday's Basketball Games

Students have the option to ride the Spirit Bus to Saturday's men's and women's basketball games. Anyone interested should sign up and pick up a permission slip in the cafeteria during lunch periods or in the office of student services after school.  

 

Departure: Leaving at 10 a.m. from CJ's Lot C

Cost: $12, and includes admission to both games

Theme: CJ Blue and Green. Spirit shirts available for $10 

Return to CJ: Approximately 3 p.m.

HEALTH CLINIC  

Senior Trip Medication Forms Due by March 8

If your child will be taking medication on the trip, please have your physician complete a Medication Administration form for each medicine. All medication forms must be turned in to the school nurse no later than Thursday, March 8, and can be downloaded here at cjeagles.org.  

 

School administration has decided that if your child is taking a prescription medication, they may bring a few extra pills in their medication bottles to prepare for any kind of emergency, snow storm, or bus breakdown; however, please do not send large bottles for chaperones to carry.

  

If you have any questions about medications or medication forms, please contact the school nurse, at 461-3740 ext 227.

College Admissions Panel Q&A for Parents 

On Monday, March 5 at 7 p.m., college admissions counselors from Indiana University, Miami University, Ohio University, Ohio State University, the University of Cincinnati and the University of Dayton will discuss an array of topics about the college application and admissions process in a question-and-answer format.  

 

The event is designed for parents of freshmen, sophomores and juniors and will be held in the Oakwood High School auditorium (directions). We are grateful for these universities sharing their guidance with our families and to the people at Oakwood High School for sponsoring the event.

Special Scholarships Application 

Applications for special scholarships, including Shillito, were distributed to current students in registration packets on January 17. Applications are due to the Welcome Center by March 1. To be considered for one of these scholarships, all requested materials must be attached.

Co-ed Eagle Youth Tennis Starts April 15

The Eagle Youth Tennis program is coached by Jim Brooks and open to boys and girls currently in grades 7-8. The first practice will be held Sunday, April 15 from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Eagle Tennis Center.

Knights of Columbus Lenten Dinner

The Knights of Columbus #3754 will host a lenten dinner every Friday in March at Marian Manor (directions), with rosary beginning at 5 p.m. Adults cost $7, children under 12 cost $4 and families cost $20.

 

The dinner menu includes fried fish, baked fish, fries, baked potato, salad, cole slaw and applesauce. Desserts are available for $.50 while they last.

Charlie Szabo '98

Charlie Szabo '98 Charlie is in his tenth year serving the Chaminade Julienne community. He coaches men's basketball, works in the office of student services and functions as moderator for the online German II class. Last weekend, the 1998 graduate was inducted into the CJ Ahtletic Hall of Fame (basketball, football).

 

The eldest in a large family of Chaminade, Julienne and CJ graduates, Charlie is proud to say he bleeds blue and green. All five of his brothers (John '00, Robert '02, Michael '05, Joe '08 and Tim '11) are alumni in addition to both his parents Chuck '72 and Ann '72. Charlie enjoys having the opportunity to work with his mother, who is an administrative assistant in the development office.

 

Away from coaching, Charlie enjoys biking and playing softball. His newest passion is spending time with his niece Lydia, who was born in August 2011.
