CJ Parent Weekly

Community Update  Department News  |  Calendar  Reminders  Parish Bulletin

Greetings!

Human trafficking, or the commercial sexual exploitation of unwilling participants, is a modern day form of slavery affecting citizens in the United States and throughout the world. As part of the class of 2012's Senior Justice Project, CJ students have examined the issue and will present on the matter during the third-ever Sister Dorothy Stang Symposium this Sunday from 1 to 3 p.m. in the auditorium.

Featured speaker Theresa Flores, author of The Slave Across the Street and survivor of human trafficking, will deliver the keynote address. Flores was recently awarded the Governor's Medal of Courage by Ohio Gov. John Kasich on February 7. She travels the U.S. sharing her story of living in slavery at the age of 15, all while living a "normal" life by day in an upper-middle class suburb of Detroit.

You are invited to hear about human trafficking from her very personal perspective as well as find out the impact both the Marianists and Sisters of Notre Dame are having on this global issue. Brother Don Neff, SM, and Sister Theresa Del Genio, SNDdeN, will serve as guest presenters.

The symposium is free and open to the public. Join us Sunday afternoon for prayer, the keynote address and breakout sessions.

Sincerely,

Molly Bardine, English teacher  |  email

STUDENT LIFE

Inspirational Speaker Addressing Students Tuesday

We are fortunate to welcome guest speaker Kyle Maynard, who will deliver an inspirational message to students next week about his personal successes in the face of extreme limitations.

Born with a condition known as congenital amputation, Kyle has no arms or legs. Despite his shortcomings, Kyle (now 25) has experienced tremendous success as a high school varsity wrestler, power lifter and most recently as the first quadruple amputee to climb to the peak of Mt Kilimanjaro unassisted.

Kyle has been featured on The Oprah Winfrey Show, Larry King Live, Good Morning America, and on the cover of USA Today. On Tuesday, Feb. 14, he will share his story with CJ students from 1:50 to 3 p.m. in the auditorium.

PARENTS

3 Ways You Can Help Make the Fish Fry a SUCCESS

The Blue Green Club appreciates your support of this year's Fish Fry, held March 10 beginning at 6 p.m. Three simple ways you can help with this event include:

1. Silent Auction Contributions: The silent auction continues to grow each year due to the generosity of our alumni and friends!  If you are able to contribute a gift card or silent auction item, please contact either Sherry Kroger at (937) 299-1352, or at tmk564@aol.com. No gift is too small!

2. Volunteer With Others: If you are interested in working a shift at the fish fry then contact Lenise Knight at (937) 321-8824, or at bit0508@hotmail.com. This is an excellent way to meet up with friends and classmates while supporting CJ!

3. Attend the Fish Fry: Invite friends out to an evening of great food and fun. Tickets are $15 at the door or $12 presale (available in the athletic office).

Snacks for Science Fair Judges

Any parents interested in contributing snacks and/or drinks for Science Fair judges ,who will be at CJ from 3:15 to 5:30 p.m. on  Thursday, Feb. 16, should please bring donations to science teacher Amy O'Loughlin's room 226 on the morning of February 15. HEALTH CLINIC

Tips for Treating Head Lice

Head lice can affect anyone and is not a sign of poor hygiene. Most head lice are transmitted during direct head-to-head contact or by sharing personal items. Common symptoms include itching and scratching, although bite marks and/or sores may be found on the scalp as well.

You can spot lice and nits by attentively combing your child's hair in natural light. They are generally found around the ears and at the back of the neck, but they may be anywhere on the scalp. If you discover head lice, consult with a health care provider regarding treatment options.

Additionally, be sure to clean all items that may have been in contact with your child's head (combs, brushes, towels, linens, clothing, book bags, etc.). To kill lice and nits, wash items in hot soapy water, place them in the dryer for 30 minutes on high heat, or seal them in a plastic bag for 14 days. For more information, visit licehelp.com >

Please let your child's close friends and parents know so they can check their children as well. Report all cases to the school nurse so that your child can be re-checked when they return. If you have any questions, please contact Tere McDonald, CJ school nurse.

Steve Fuchs

Steve Fuchs Steve Fuchs is in his 16th year at Chaminade Julienne. He started working at CJ immediately after graduating from the University of Dayton. After spending 10 years as a math and computer science teacher, he began his transition into administration, spending four years as a part-time teacher and part-time registrar. These last two years he has moved into full-time administration as the director of the academic office.

As director, Steve is responsible for overseeing all academic matters including grades, transcripts, curriculum, course scheduling, the physical education waiver and flex credit programs, the student database, and parent-teacher conferences. These items require that he works closely with all of the department chairs on continually reviewing and updating CJ's curriculum and with the guidance counselors on student academic matters.  He is also a member of CJ's LPDC team which works with teachers on continuing their professional development and relicensure.

Steve has lived in Dayton his entire life and was fortunate to have attended Catholic schools from grade school all the way through college. He earned his master's degree from the University of Dayton in 2006 and is currently working on obtaining his principal's licensure. Steve has also been an adjunct instructor for UD's mathematics department since 2006 teaching Calculus for business majors in the evenings.

He is married, has four children who range in age from 13-years-old to 9 months, and is a member of St. Charles parish in Kettering. Since his three oldest children play basketball and softball, Steve's free time is spent in school gyms and softball fields around the Dayton area.
