Counselors have begun to work with students on their course requests, beginning with the freshmen. Be sure to check the guidance Web pages, including important information by class, for the latest news and updates.

Preparing for the SAT and/or ACT

A common misconception among some parents is that it may be a good idea to have their son or daughter take the SAT or ACT "cold" the first time. Learn why it doesn't help to take these tests cold, and may even hurt students. Details >

February Health News

February is National Health Month. Lifelong habits begin at home, so make dental health part of your daily routine and share these reminders with your whole family:

  • Brush your teeth at least twice daily with fluoride toothpaste, especially after breakfast and before bedtime. Drinking water after eating also helps to clear your teeth of food particles.
  • Floss every day.
  • Limit the number of times you eat snacks, especially the sticky ones and long lasting ones.
  • Visit a dentist regularly.
  • Protect your teeth by wearing a mouth guard when playing sports.
  • Don't forget to change your toothbrush regularly and after an illness.

2012-13 Scheduling and Registration

The 2012-13 course registration packets contain a registration and scheduling timeline, information about special scholarships, and a course request worksheet. Consider these options when going over the information with your student:

  • CJ offers summer PE and health classes. Info was included in the course request packets for current freshmen and sophomores.
  • Students can choose to use a physical education waiver to fulfill gym requirements. Anyone who participates in two full seasons of interscholastic athletics, marching band, or cheerleading may be eligible. Reference the 2012-2013 Course Catalog for more information.
  • The flex credit program allows students to earn credit for activities outside of CJ. All flex credit activities require detailed plans and prior approval from CJ's academic office before students can earn credit.  Further information on the flex credit program is available here at cjeagles.org
  • CJ offers an online, single-semester World Literature class for seniors, and an online, single-semester Medical Terminology class for juniors and seniors.

If you have questions about the course registration and scheduling process, please contact your student's counselor directly.

Featured Faculty & Staff Member

Mike Kelly '87

Mike Kelly '87 Mike Kelly '87, has been teaching at CJ since 2005, although this is his first year as a full-time faculty member. When he began teaching, he was coming off four years as a full-time, stay-at-home dad and began working part-time so that he could also continue his primary role at home. Prior to 2001, Mike had spent four years overseas teaching English as a second language. Mike and his wife, Miles, spent two years in Saudi Arabia and two years in Turkey, where their daughter, Anna was born.

Mike is a proud alumnus of Chaminade Julienne, Xavier University, and Villanova University. At Xavier, he received degrees in both English and history, before moving on to Villanova for a master's degree in American History. While at Villanova, he met his wife and moved to Albany, N.Y. after graduation. It was there he studied and completed his education certification classes at Russell Sage College.

After returning to the States and the Dayton area in 2001, Mike has stayed active in a variety of areas: raising his two children (Anna and Aidan), serving as a JV baseball coach at CJ, and playing more basketball than his knees have appreciated. He is even a member of a band which plays rock'n'roll covers.
