CJ Parent Weekly

Community Update  Department News  |  Calendar  Reminders  Parish Bulletin

Greetings!

All current freshmen, sophomores and juniors have now received a course request information packet for the 2012-13 school year. Packets should contain a registration and scheduling timeline, information about special scholarships, and a course request worksheet.

Many students look forward to having an opportunity to take elective courses such as performing and visual arts classes, Project Lead the Way curriculum, and foreign languages, but may find it difficult to participate due to scheduling conflicts involving required coursework. While all students can obtain the necessary credits for graduation during regular school hours, there are several other options you and your child may want to explore in order to free up time for electives.

Consider these options when going over the course registration information with your student this weekend:

  • Take PE and health at CJ over the summer. Information regarding these summer classes was included in the course request packets for current freshmen and sophomores.
  • Use co-curricular activites to your advantage. Beginning next year, students can choose to use a physical education waiver to fulfill gym requirements. Anyone who participates in two full seasons of interscholastic athletics, marching band, or cheerleading may be eligible. Reference the 2012-2013 Course Catalog for more information.
  • Make your extra-curriculars count. The flex credit program allows students to earn credit for activities outside of CJ.  Activities may include taking a summer course at a college or university, taking an online class from another high school, or designing your own course of study. All flex credit activities require detailed plans and prior approval from CJ's academic office before students can earn credit.  Further information on the flex credit program is available here at cjeagles.org
  • Enter the virtual classroom. CJ offers an online, single-semester World Literature class for seniors, and an online, single-semester Medical Terminology class for juniors and seniors.

Remember, students begin confirming their selections with counselors on Monday, Jan. 23. If you have questions about the course registration and scheduling process, please contact your student's counselor directly.

Sincerely,

Seasonal Reminders for Staying Healthy

Now is the time when students are more likely to be vulnerable to seasonal outbreaks of common colds, flu and head lice. Please remind your students of these helpful, preventative steps for staying healthy this winter:

  • Wash hands often, especially before eating and after using the restroom.
  • Cover your mouth and nose when coughing and sneezing.
  • Avoid sharing food and beverages with others.
  • Avoid sharing headwear and other items that may come in contact with the head or hair.

Body Mass Index Screenings

Ohio Revised Code 3313.674, known as the Healthy Choices for Healthy Children legislation, requires that all districts and community schools take Body Mass Index (BMI) screenings for students in kindergarten, third grade, fifth grade and ninth grade. In compliance with the law, CJ will begin screening the current freshman class Monday, Jan. 23. Screenings will occur during religion classes.

If you have a freshman student you should have received a letter by mail notifying you of this law. Please be sure to read the letter and if you choose to exclude your student from the testing, please notify CJ in writing no later than Friday, Jan. 20. Additional information about BMI screenings and FAQs is available at www.letsmove.gov or www.getupmc.org. If you have any questions, please contact me at 461.3740 x227.

Reminder for Parents of Kairos Retreat Participants

If your student is signed up to attend the January Kairos retreat (view list of participants) and will need to take medication while they are gone, please have your doctor complete an Authorization for School Personnel Administration of Medication Form and return it to the nurse's office by Wednesday, Jan. 18. You will need one form for each medication that the student will need to take.

Authorization from your doctor is required for all medications, even if they are over-the-counter and all medications are required to be kept by staff. Students are not allowed to carry or self-administer their own medications unless it is an asthma inhaler or epi-pen, in which case an Authorization for Self-Carry Administration of Medication form must be on file with the nurse. Please refer to the Medication Administration during Overnight School Trips Procedure or contact Tere McDonald (email) at 461.3740  x227 with any questions.

All health forms and procedures are available from the CJ Health Clinic Web pages under the Student Life tab.
