Greetings!
Next week begins Hunger and Homeless Awareness Week at CJ. The office of ministry and service has planned many activities to help raise Chaminade Julienne's awareness of these issues affecting people locally, nationally and internationally.
From Monday, November 14 through Monday, November 21, there will be myriad opportunities for your son or daughter to become engaged participants in the effort.
Although donation collection will not begin until Monday, first period teachers will get things started tomorrow morning by sharing a special prayer and PowerPoint presentation with students. Members of FLIGHT will also explain the week's activities Friday morning. In addition, the daily morning announcements and prayer will be accompanied by a quote or statistic in reference to issues of hunger or homelessness.
Donations will then be collected during all first period classes each day. Our donation quota for each person is $2.50 and any two items. Money will benefit Catholic Relief Services and Oxfam, two international hunger relief organizations. Items including toiletries, non-perishable food, suitcases/bags, hats and gloves will be collected and donated directly to local organizations including Catholic Social Services, St. Vincent's, The Food Bank and the Life Enrichment Center.
This year's donation drive will double as a competition between the students and members of the faculty and staff. Should the students make a larger donation (by percentage), they will have the pleasure of seeing math teacher Ann Meyers dye her hair and social studies teacher Jim Sparrow style his into a Mohawk.
With follicles at stake, faculty and staff are expected to be just as active -- if not more -- than in years past. However, along with competing against students, CJ employees will once again gather together to prepare meals for the House of Bread and bagged lunches for St. Vincent's on the late-start block morning of Wednesday, November 16 during CJ's bi-monthly faculty and staff Faith Sharing session.
And, like last year, Thursday is an optional "fast day." Students at all lunch periods are encouraged to fast -- if not from a whole meal, then from junk food or soda -- and instead donate any money not spent on food. Freshman, sophomores, juniors and seniors are welcome to help us prepare bagged lunches in the cafeteria at this time for the hungry at the House of Bread.
If by November 21 all donation quotas are met (faculty, staff and students combined), CJ will be awarded a free day off later in the year. All are invited to join the effort of accomplishing our goal and thereby increasing our community's collective consciousness of these worldwide issues!
Sincerely, Kelli D. Kinnear, Ministry & Service | email

Featured Faculty & Staff Member
Erin Bole '04
Erin Bole is very happy to be returning this year as an assistant director of Ministry and Service at CJ. She sees working in Ministry and Service as an excellent opportunity to grow in her own faith and help develop the faith of the student body and staff. She helps lead many of the retreats at CJ and feels that working with students in small groups to develop their ability and uncover their potential as faith leaders has been one of the most rewarding aspects of working in campus ministry. After graduating from CJ in 2004, Erin attended the University of Dayton. After graduating, she joined a volunteer program for teachers (the Pacific Alliance for Catholic Education or PACE) where she taught English and religion at a high school in Salt Lake City, Utah for two years. She also lived in Portland, Oregon over the summer, completing a master's degree in Education at the University of Portland. After completing the PACE program, she moved back to Dayton upon receiving the opportunity to work at CJ Outside of CJ, Erin enjoys traveling, reading, and residing in downtown Dayton, where she lives with other UD graduates. Erin continues to be involved with the Marianists around the city and participates in the young adult ministry at Immaculate Conception Parish. Her favorite part about working at CJ is the faculty and staff -- whether through a faculty flash mob dance at a pep rally, or bonding with other teachers and staff while directing a retreat -- she truly feels CJ is a wonderful place to work!
