CJ Community Writing Center
Opens Today!
Greetings!

On Friday, Jan. 7, Chaminade Julienne mailed out acceptance letters to eighth grade families who applied for the class of 2015. By reviewing applications and interviewing several potential students, our admissions committee took time and careful thought to select students for the next freshman class. CJ has now seen a 30 percent increase in students accepted compared to this time last year.

Thanks to everyone in the CJ community who has worked to make this result possible. If you have questions or know of a family who might like information about CJ, please do not hesitate to contact me.

We look forward to welcoming members of the class of 2015 at Priority Course Selection Day on Saturday, Feb. 26.

Sincerely,

Brett Chmiel, Admissions Coordinator

160/125 Anniversary Information

Community GIFT
As CJ continues to celebrate the school's rich history and tradition during this anniversary year, please remember that you are invited to join our students and the community to dedicate your volunteer hours in conjunction with our 160/125 Celebration.

The CJ community has dedicated nearly 700 hours of service (not including student service hours) already this year! Please take a moment to think back over the holiday season, and let us know of any community service you'd like to donate by entering your hours here.

Catholic Schools Week

January 31 - February 4

The Anniversary Committee has planned a number of activities for students, faculty, staff and the CJ community during the upcoming Catholic Schools Week. Here's just a glimpse of what you can expect:

  • Throughout the week, there will be a number of outreach events for elementary schools. Key Club has invited schools to participate in a book drive to collect new and gently used books for libraries in both Belize and at the Dayton Children's Medical Center. We will also be sending posters to Catholic elementary schools which will feature CJ students who are alumni of each school.
  • There will be a trivia question each morning for students to answer. A winner will be drawn from the correct responses each afternoon, and will receive amazing prizes!
  • Tuesday, Feb. 1, is Catholic t-shirt day. Students, faculty and staff may wear a Catholic elementary school shirt, a CJ t-shirt, or a Catholic college t-shirt.
  • On Thursday, Feb. 3, CJ parents along with the Co-Educators will host a special luncheon for faculty and staff (more information below).

In addition, on Friday, Feb.4, CJ will host a school-wide Anniversary Assembly to celebrate the history of our institution. Special guests, including members of the Sisters of Notre Dame and Society of Mary will be invited, as well as former faculty and staff. After the assembly, everyone will be welcomed to come to a reception in the library.

A Message from the Nurses Office

Body Mass Index Screenings

Recently, Ohio Revised Code 3313.674, known as the Healthy Choices for Healthy Children legislation, was signed into law. This law is aimed at reducing childhood obesity by ensuring that students have access to healthy meals and beverages at school and by providing students and parents with information about student health.

One of the first requirements of the law is that all districts and community schools must begin Body Mass Index (BMI) screenings for all students in kindergarten, third grade, fifth grade and ninth grade beginning in the 2010-2011 school year. BMI screenings then must take place in these grades every school year.

CJ will be complying with this legislation for 9th grade beginning in January 2011. If you have a freshman student you will be receiving a letter by mail notifying you of this law. Please be sure to read the letter and if you choose to exclude your student from the testing, please notify the school in writing no later than Friday, Jan. 21. If you have any questions, please contact the school nurse at 461.3740 x227. Additional information about BMI screenings and FAQs is available at www.letsmove.gov or www.getupmc.org

Eagles Learning Center

CJ will begin offering an after school program, the Eagles Learning Center, every Monday - Friday from 3:30 to 5 p.m. in the school library. Students remaining in the school after 3:30 p.m. who are not participating in another organized CJ activity will be directed to the Eagles Learning Center where they will have access to resources to assist with schoolwork and opportunities for further enrichment.  Please encourage your students to take advantage of this opportunity if they are in need of extra academic supports or if they need a safe place to be after school hours. Please contact Mrs. Badinghaus, student support coordinator, if you have further questions or comments regarding the implementation of this new program.

mealVolunteers & Donations Needed for
Teacher Appreciaton Meal

Traditionally the Co-Educators and CJ parents provide a special meal during Catholic Schools week to show the CJ staff our appreciation for all the work they do with our children. This year's luncheon is scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 3. Please consider helping make this day special by participating in some way. We need donations of special desserts and a few door prizes to help make this day memorable.

The teachers have requested if you send in a special dish to send the recipe too. If you are not a cook but would still like to help, there are plenty of opportunities. We will be setting up and decorating the night before and we need help with serving and cleaning up that day. If you would like to help, or want more information, contact Mari Jo Rosenbauer at 890-3955.

Senior Picture Deadline Approaching

Attention all senior parents, the deadline for submitting a  senior picture for the 2011 yearbook is February 1.  If your senior son or daughter has already been photographed at Easterling Studios, then you do not need to submit a photo to CJ (we receive them automatically).  However, if your senior child was photographed at any other studio, you are responsible for submitting a copy of their formal yearbook picture to Mr. Greg Mueller or a member of the yearbook staff by February 1.

If you still need to schedule a sitting for senior pictures, Easterling Studios can be contacted at 937.222.8410. Remember, if your senior son or daughter wants to be included in the class composite picture that hangs in the halls of CJ, he/she must be photographed at Easterling.

CJ Ski and Snowboarding Club

We took 28 students to Perfect North Friday night. After about an hour and a half bus ride, students enjoyed five hours of skiing through light flurries on the slopes. The bus arrived back at CJ at about 12:40 a.m. with all students sleepy and uninjured.

Any student wishing to go skiing with the CJ Ski and Snowboard Club is invited to do so either by buying a club pass through Perfect North or on a pay as you go. Please let Mrs. Marshall know by Wednesday so there is time to get the EMF from the nurse. Also, a permission slip must be signed by parent and child, and returned to Mrs. Marshall in order to be allowed on the bus and to ski. A night of lift ticket and equipment rental at Perfect North is @ $70; cost for the bus is $5. All ability levels are welcome!

Save Your Christmas Cards!

The office of Ministry & Service will be collecting religious Christmas cards this year to donate during the annual summer mission trip to Belize. The goal is to give over 3,000 kids in grades K-8 their first Christmas card next Advent in an effort to help teach them the meaning of the season. New cards are not necessary as the backs will all be torn off and thrown away. You can drop off cards in the office of Ministry & Service any time after the holidays. Thank you for you support!
