We have a lot of exciting things happening at Mentor Corps so I wanted to be more timely with my updates. I've decided to do a periodic newsletter to share our stories of growth and success.

Workshop at Moose Lake Prison

Jim and Rocky
Jim Hale, Mentor Corps Founder and Executive Director (right) and Rocky DeYoung, Reentry Manager at Inner Change Freedom Initiative at Lino Lakes Prison, (left) held a Marching On workshop for 13 soon-to-be-released offenders on February 25, 2010.

The Marching On workshop outlined a Mentoring Model for Reentry and Renewal which is intended for men coming out of incarceration, addictions or homelessness so they can understand how to engage with a Mentor. The workshops are important because they help define the role the Mentee and Mentor to insure both know what is expected of them.

The workshop featured a series of role-play exercises, a Mentee current activities chart, a financial budget guide, a work readiness checklist, Mentor feedback and tracking, spiritual discipleship feedback and more.

If you'd like to learn more about being a Mentor, please contact Jim Hale at jim@thementorcorps.org or call 612-963-0820.

Valuable Work Experience
Mike and Joann Taylor founded MNSOARR more than four years ago to help men and women renew their lives in Christ and gain employment.

Most MNSOARR employees have a background of incarceration, addictions or homelessness and are given a chance to gain valuable work experience at MNSOARR. MNSOARR has recently partnered with Mentor Corps to provide a Discipleship Battle Unit through a "base camp house." The "base camp house" consists of overall life skills mentoring and oversight of MNSOARR employees. This helps them continue on the path of renewal and reentry into society.

Testimonial from Michael Thompson, an MNSOARR employee:

Michael
"I have been through a number of treatment transitions over the years, but since graduating from The Salvation Army Adult Rehabilitation Center over 3 years ago and being selected for the Mentor Corps mentoring program, my life has been transformed. Now through the power of the Holy Spirit, my Mentor, Bob and my wonderful employer MNSOARR, I am learning to lean on Christ and HE is bringing me to this new life. I am so grateful for this opportunity with Mentor Corps and the others."

About MNSOARR:
MNSOARR provides commercial cleaning, painting, maintenance, floor care/installation, commercial/residential energy efficient lighting and snow removal. For more information, please call Mike at 612-770-8202 or visit www.mnsoarr.com.

About
Mentor Corps recruits and trains Mentors to serve those reentering society following rehabilitation or incarceration through a focus on Christian discipleship principles. Mentor Corps recruits men to be Mentees after meeting with them extensively. All Mentees come from a Christian rehabilitation and recovery such as Teen Challenge, The Salvation Army ARC, Inner Change Freedom Initiative (IFI) at Lino lakes Prison, or others in the area. Mentors come along-side these men and walk with them for up to three years, helping them to develop their character, their faith and help them to become self-reliant.

Shoe drives provide win-win partnerships.

Under the leadership of Daryl Schuck, hundreds of shoes have been donated to Mentor Corps. After an initial call to explain our ministry mission, Daryl works with management at a variety of organizations to sponsor a shoe drive at their office. Daryl picks up the shoes which are then sorted, with most going to be sold on the Mentor Corps eBay site. The rest are given to Kingdom Square for resale at their ministry thrift store in Minneapolis or to The Salvation Army Rehabilitation Center. All proceeds from the eBay store are given to Mentor Corps.

A variety of businesses, both large and small, have organized shoe drives at their offices including: Eaton Corporation, MDI Achieve, ADC and Help/Systems (below).

Book donation partnership with Alpha CitiCorps ministry.

We organize book drives and pick up donations at your workplace or home. Christian books, textbooks and best-sellers provide the best resale. We give the books to Alpha CitiCorps to process on eBay. They in turn give Mentor Corps a portion of the proceeds. This partnership benefits both Mentor Corps and Alpha CitiCorps.

Car donations through Donation Line, LLC.

Donate your car by calling 1-877-227-7487, ext. 2477 and ask for Mentor Corps. Make sure to have the title in hand when they pick your car up (anywhere in the USA). Once the car is sold, Mentor Corps receives a major portion of the sale. A tax-deduction letter is sent to you from Mentor Corps.

Testimonials:

Michael Thompson (current Mentee): "I really felt good about donating my car; Mentor Corps has helped me so much over the last couple years. All it took was a phone call and they picked the car up in days. Giving back is a great feeling."

Bob Humphrey (Mentor Corps board member): "When it came time to get a new car for my wife, it made perfect sense to use Donate Line for the old one. I urge folks to consider this easy way to get rid of the car with no hassles but mostly, it's an easy way to help support a great ministry in the Twin Cities."
