Microdermabrasion Packages are Back for 2010

Microdermabrasion is a painless procedure that leaves your skin smooth and refreshed with no downtime. The skin exfoliation process reveals new living cells, so topical treatments like Retin A, Vitamin C and alpha hydroxy acids penetrate the skin more effectively.

For a limited time only, purchase a package of 3 microdermabrasion treatments for $299.

Botox and Injectable Fillers 101

Botox®, Dysport™, Restylane®, Juvéderm™, Radiesse®, Sculptra®. What are they and how do they differ?

"With so many products crowding the market, it can be a challenge to know what product can work best for your cosmetic concerns," says Lahey cosmetic dermatologist Emily J. Fisher, MD.  "Many of my patients ask, which of these products would work best to make my face look more youthful?"

Botox and Dysport are both "botulinum toxins." Throughout the day, muscles in our face move and become tense frequently. Over time, this constant movement creates lines that can make us look older, tired and even angry. Botox and Dysport work by relaxing those muscles, thereby softening facial wrinkles and creating a more youthful, relaxed and happier-appearing face.

"Botox and Dysport work best in the muscles of the upper portions of the face-primarily to relax the lines on the forehead, between your eyebrows and in the crows feet area," says Fisher. Botox treatment consists of approximately five to eight injections per treatment area-the needle used is very small, limiting the pain as well as the side effects.

"However, toxins are not ideally used in the lower portions of the face because relaxing those muscles leads to unwanted side effects, like the inability to smile fully," says Fisher. For this reason, dermal or "injectable" fillers such as Restylane, Juvéderm, Radiesse and Sculptra are used to improve the signs of aging in the lower parts of the face.

"Over time, we all lose volume in the face, primarily in the cheekbones, nasolabial folds, lips and hollows of the cheeks," says Fisher. Dermal fillers work by replacing this volume, creating a fuller, more youthful face. There is some pain with the injection, and some patients develop bruising, but overall, the risk of side effects is low and the results are immediate.

Each filler has unique properties, and deciding which one is best for each patient depends on the area to be treated, the skin type and other factors that are discussed together during a consultation.

Question:

Who is a good candidate for a facelift? Is age an important factor?

~Sally, Woburn

Answer:

A facelift (rhytidectomy) is a surgical procedure to improve visible signs of aging in the face and neck, especially addressing wrinkles, sagging, jowling and loose skin.

Facelift surgery is a good option for patients who are physically healthy, don't smoke and have realistic goals in mind for the improvement of their appearance.

Age is not necessarily the most important factor in determining whether a facelift is appropriate. Most facelift candidates are between 40 and 70 years old. Since the aging process is ongoing, no facelift procedure can produce permanent results, however many procedures will leave the face looking refreshed for 10 years or longer. The longevity depends on many factors, including current skin condition, genetics, age at the time of the procedure, history of smoking and sun exposure.

There are many types of facelifts but they are all variations of the main basic principle, which consists of elevating, redraping and tightening the skin and soft tissues of the face.

Procedures that are typically performed in conjunction with a facelift are a brow lift, to correct a sagging or deeply furrowed brow, eyelid surgery, to rejuvenate aging eyes, and laser resurfacing.

A facelift is an excellent surgical procedure that can effectively enhance the facial appearance and improve the signs of aging. A qualified plastic surgeon can best guide you in deciding which procedure is appropriate for your situation.
