 A Note from the Principal

Dear Parents:

October has been another busy month for A.E. Wright. Students have had the opportunity to participate in Red Ribbon Week,  Magazine Drive activities such as the Shave-It truck, Game truck, and Limo Lunch, beach days (6th grade),Yosemite (8th grade Honor Society), spirit rally, school spirit dress-up day, Halloween dress-up, our first school dances of the year and much more!

The highlight of the month for me was the anti-bullying assembly featuring Mark Brown, the 1995 World Champion of Public Speaking. Mr. Brown delivered a powerful message of tolerance, kindness, and respect. He used his own personal experiences of growing up in Jamaica as well as the story of Beauty and the Beast to convey the seriousness and damaging effects of bullying. Mr. Brown described a scene from Beauty and the Beast where Gaston and the villagers decide to attack the Beast. Belle tries to tell Gaston that while the Beast may look scary that "he is really very gentle and kind." Instead of listening to Belle, Gaston gathers the villagers and leads them to go after the Beast saying "We don't like what we don't understand, in fact, it scares us and this monster is mysterious at least. Bring your guns! Bring your knives! Save your children and your wives....we'll kill the beast!" Mr. Brown encouraged the students to "Be like Belle." She saw beyond the Beast's outward appearance and treated him with kindness. She didn't buy into Gaston's lies nor did she follow the status quo and go along with the popular group like the villagers did.

Mr. Brown then went on to challenge the saying "sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me." He talked about the power of words and shared letters from students who have been victims of bullying. He talked about the hurtful names middle school students call each other and then justify the names with a "just kidding." Mr. Brown urged the students to make a change and to refrain from using hurtful words, slurs, or derogatory names on the school yard or in texts, emails, or instant messages. He also encouraged the students to seek help from a teacher, counselor, or parent to help resolve situations in which unkind words, actions, or deeds are taking place.

Mr. Brown shared his own experiences of being bullied as a child in Jamaica. He still remembers the names of the three children who tormented him almost thirty years ago. Mr. Brown asked our students, "How do you want to be remembered thirty years from now? What will other students say about you when they look through the yearbook and see your picture?" He then went on to ask, "Will you be remembered as a Gaston, a villager, or a Belle?"

Please make sure the following November dates are on your calendar at home:
November 2-6             Aluminum Can Drive
November 10              Veteran's Day Assembly
November 17              PFC Meeting, 9:15am in the Teacher's Lounge

Dear A.E. Wright Parents,

This month, we are asking you all to take a moment and imagine what it would be like to send your child to school if the PFC was unable to provide access to state of the art computers, up to date software and support for technology.  What would it be like if we had to divide up 2 hours of library time a week between the entire school?  What about losing the ability to provide the resources needed to keep our top notch music programs, amazing science labs and incredible fine arts programs at such high and competitive levels?  Aren't you grateful to have a P.E. program that exposes the kids to almost every sport or physical activity that there is, be it the challenge of climbing the rock wall, experiencing the physical art of fencing or use of the Heart Lab?  And we know you all love that second set of textbooks! Yes, you guessed it...this is about the Spartan Donor Drive, the second of three yearly fundraisers sponsored by your PFC and coming your way this month!  The Spartan Donor Drive is our direct donation request and as we are a charitable organization, 100% tax deductible.  Please know that your donations are crucial to keeping these programs...we need your participation.  Although we hope that you already recognize the value of what your child receives in exchange, we also understand that these are difficult times. We at AEW take pride in the fact that we are a community, and as such, our real and ultimate goal is participation.  If you are unable to give the amount requested, we hope that you will be as generous as you can, keeping in mind that every dollar does help. For those of you who can do a bit more, we thank you for realizing that educating our children raises up our community.  As soon as your envelope arrives, we hope that you will consider not putting it on top of the pile. Instead, put down what you are doing, take that moment to reflect on what is gained and send in your donation! Thank you all in advance for your generosity.

Speaking of thank you's, we have many this month.  Our Magazine Drive was very successful thanks to the incredible Lindsey Rosefsky, with major support from Dawn Rhodes.  Due to the amazing Rob Jordan, our Spartan Directory was completed and delivered earlier than ever; with more Advertising than ever before thanks to the wonderful and ongoing commitment by Cathy Hanzelik.   I would also like to thank Matt Breddan and Faye Ghalchi  for helping to input for the Directory, and Stephanie Columbus for the HUGE job of proofreading that she did.  Karen DeJesse has continued to enhance AEW with her Beautification efforts...come on out this month for some rose trimming with the gardening group; it's actually fun and makes a big difference on campus.  As always, the kids had a blast at the school dances; thank you Simone Brien, Chris Cohen, Julie Fuld and Desiree Steinberg for making the dances so much fun.  Thank you Nikki C'Dealva for coordinating the wonderful enrichment opportunities available to the children after school. To the Korcheks and other families who manned the beverage booth at the LVMWD Fair...we appreciate you! The 8th Grade Honor Society kids returned from their trip to Yosemite with smiling faces and lots of stories and accomplishments to share, and the 7th Grade Honors kids are preparing for their trip to Catalina....we are so proud!
Enjoy November and Happy Thanksgiving to you all.

ktaylorlaptopsDistrict Technology Plan & Awarded Grant Takes Stride on Campus
by Alison Hooper
Laptops at AE Wright
Following a nearly year long study by the Xplain Corporation headed by Neil Ticktin, the District presented to the Board of Education the results and recommendations for technology strategy addressing both educational and administrative needs in the coming years. Couple that with LVUSD recently being awarded nearly $1.4 million dollars from the California Department of Education (CDE) to support the District's achievement of gains by its 4th through 8th grade students in targeted areas of technology literacy and the English/Language Arts test scores during 2008-2010. This grant, the largest 2008 EETT- Competitive grant in Los Angeles County (CTAP Region 11), was one of only four grants funded in the Region in 2008.

Principal Kimmarie Taylor, along with Language Arts teacher, Ms. McDonnell, provided the AE Wright Parent Faculty Club with a hands-on demonstration of the in-class use of United Streaming, Laptop Carts, Handhelds (Student Response Systems), Ceiling Mounted Projectors, planned use of PowerPoint assignments, Cyber Security and Cyber Safety. These are fantastic advantages for Middle Schoolers as colleges currently utilize these features. Current and past homework assignments, grades, attendance and even lunch money usage is all available to parents online, (see previous eSpartan issues for more details) so make these features part of the parent internet experience, too.

First of Four Forums Held November 9th

As part of its outreach effort to the community, the Las Virgenes Unified School District will sponsor bi-monthly Superintendent's Forums open to the community. The sessions will be unstructured and will allow community members to raise issues and ask questions of district senior management. The meetings will be held at school sites to also afford community members the opportunity to visit their neighborhood schools and have a window into the community's outstanding school system.

The evenings will be hosted by Donald Zimring, Superintendent for the District, and will rotate between the east and west sides of the District to afford a maximum opportunity for public participation. The meetings will take place on Monday evenings. All meetings will begin at 7:30p.m. and end by 9:00p.m.

"Annie" the Musical
Fall After-School Play Prodiction Not to be Missed
Annie
A number of AE Wright students have been hard at work rehearsing the music and story of an orphan named Annie, and her dog Sandy, who are placed in the lap of luxury for a week as a part of a publicity campain for Oliver Warbucks. However, Annie's stay turns out to be much more than anyone had bargained for as she works her way into everyone's hearts and learns a few things for herself.

Performances are November 13, 14 & 15 held at the Class Act Musical Theatre located at 5345 Wilhelmina Avenue in Woodland Hills. (Just North of the 101 Freeway off Valley Circle Blvd.) For show times and tickets, call the theatre directly at (818) 703-6364.

Fall Aluminum Can Drive
by Greg Bostrom - 7th Grade Science Teacher and Can Drive Coordinator

November 2 - 6, 2009

FREE MONEY FOR A. E. WRIGHT!  That's correct!  FREE MONEY!  Each aluminum can we recycle during our can drive provides funds for our science lab experiments.  Please save your aluminum cans and recycle them through our aluminum can drive.  Simply crush cans and place them in a plastic trash bag.  Mark the bag with the homeroom teacher and student name, and the total number of cans inside the bag.  Keep your cans in your garage or other convenient storage location.  When our drive begins, bring the bag to the area outside the science building.  It's that easy!  Start collecting and saving cans today!

Did you know this event is managed entirely through the volunteer efforts of our Leadership students and Waste Management Industries?  Our Leadership students count, collect, and move hundreds of cans to storage each day throughout the duration of the drive.  Waste Management Industries donates a large container and transfers our load of cans to a local recycling center for disposal.  Through their donations, we are able to raise over $1,500 each school year.   Recycling aluminum cans is good for the environment, saves landfill space, and raises funds for laboratory supplies in each science classroom.

Reflections Program
by the Las Virgenes Arts Parent Teacher Association (LV Arts PTA)
Art
The Las Virgenes Arts Parent Teacher Association (LV Arts PTA) has organized the Reflections program because students need more opportunities to create works of art for fun and recognition, and the program provides an outlet for students to creatively explore what they are learning in the classroom. The Reflections Program is run by parent volunteers, thereby providing another opportunity to involve parents in their children's education. Participation in the program gives students a chance to experiment in the arts. When children express themselves through words, pictures, music, dance, film, and other art media, they grow intellectually; they learn to analyze their thoughts and feelings. The Reflections Program helps parents recognize, support, and enhance their children's continuous process of self-discovery.

Don't miss the first time in Reflections' 40 year history that Las Virgenes students can participate!  Aspiring student writers, photographers, producers, choreographers, composers, and artists create works inspired by the theme for 2009-2010: "Beauty Is. . ." Las Virgenes Gallery night is November 18th at Sumac Elementary, and winners will also be on display in the lobby art show at the LVEF Benefit Concert in March 2010.

LVArtsPTA was organized to participate in Reflections, a state and national recognition program for the arts sponsored by CA and National Parent Teacher Association (PTA). To learn more, visit them at http://lvartspta.tripod.com or contact the AE Wright representatives: Susan Polk, Lisa Maliana and Fariba Tiffany.

Las Virgenes Education Foundation
Fall News

The mission of LVEF is to create and/or financially support quality educational opportunities for all students K-12 in
the Las Virgenes Unified School District and to engage the communities of the LVUSD in this support.

LVEF CAAP - Too often parents ask, "Why didn't somebody tell me that?" or, "I should have done what...when?" as they and their
students deal with the complicated and challenging process of applying to colleges. LVEF is pleased to offer a FREE College Application and Acceptance Program known as CAAP which will offer an on-line webcast library available 24/7, an e-mail reminder system, Saturday morning teleseminars, an annual planner, and 8 comprehensive live workshops for grades 8 through 12.

Benefit for the Arts Nets $102,000 - The Las Virgenes Educational Foundation in partnership with Artists for the Arts produced a concert last February with Michael McDonald, Christopher Cross, and Tommy Shaw starring 72 student musicians from the LVUSD! Middle school music and choir groups were featured in the lobby before the show along with over 250 pieces of elementary school student art. A total of $102,000 was raised through ticket sales and the support of the LVUSD community! These funds will support arts programs district wide.

Model Schools and the Future of LVEF - Over the summer we sent 10 high school administrators and teachers from LVUSD to Atlanta, Georgia for the Model Schools Conference, where the 50 top performing schools shared their formulas for success. Those representatives returned energized and ready to share their new knowledge and techniques with other teachers. The LVEF looks forward to being able to expand this program to include teachers and administrators K-12.

To find out how you can help and be a part of the future of quality education, visit: www.mylvef.org
