A Note from the Principal
Dear Parents,
It seems like just yesterday that I was sitting down to write the principal's message for the September newsletter. My how time flies! This past month started off with an exciting visit from Mr. Jack O'Connell, State Superintendent of Public Instruction. He came to visit A.E. Wright and offer his congratulations for receiving the 2009 Distinguished Schools Award. Mr. O'Connell was very complimentary of our school and enjoyed the opportunity to visit classrooms and meet some of our students. During STAR testing week, our 6th and 7th grade students were visited by representatives from the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office. The representatives talked to the students about cyber safety and cyber bullying. Towards the end of the month our 8th grade students met with the Juvenile Team from the Lost Hills Sheriff's Station to discuss the dangers and legal ramifications of participating in cyber bullying. Some of the safety tips the presenters shared with the students were:
- Don't save login information on the computer
- Do not give login names or passwords to friends
- Parents SHOULD know ALL of the student's user IDS and passwords
- Never give out identifying information such as name, home address, school name, or telephone number
- Don't be "friends" with anyone not known in the physical world
- Don't post pictures of family or friends without permission
- Do not pass on inappropriate pictures, texts, or emails to friends
While the internet can be a fabulous tool for research and communication, it can also be misused. Please remind your child of the importance of being safe and appropriate when using the internet and in sending text messages. Many of our students know far more about the internet than we do. It is important that we as parents monitor our children as best we can. Do you know which social web sites (ie Facebook, MySpace) your child visits? Do you know your child's user ID and password for your child's email, social networking, and/or instant messenger accounts? If not, you need to find out! Do you know that POS, CD9, MOS, PAL, PAW, PIR, or P911 are all texting codes to signal others that a parent is in the room or that you are looking over their shoulder? Be aware! For those who would like additional information on cyber safety, please visit the main page on our website.
As I reflect on my first year as principal, I am filled with profound gratitude for all those involved in making A.E. Wright a great place for kids. What a blessing it is to have such a wonderful Parent Faculty Club (PFC) whose members donate hours of their time to fundraise, provide enrichment, and enhance the activities that take place at A.E. Wright. What a wonderful support you the parents are to your child and to their teachers when you help reinforce the importance of education at home. Thank you for checking your child's organizer, for helping your child establish an effective study and homework routine, and for working with the teachers to address any problem that might arise. When I visit classrooms and watch the interactions between the students and the faculty I am inspired by the faculty's dedication and desire for the students to succeed. I can't tell you how many times I have watched members of our classified staff stop what they are doing and help a student in need. What a wonderful place to live as our surrounding cities and local sheriff's station are dedicated to education. Special thanks is owed to the City of Calabasas which has spent its time and financial resources to help reduce traffic and congestion around A.E. Wright as well as provide services to increase the safety of the school. Indeed, it takes a village! Listed below is information regarding the activities offered for culminating students. Please put the dates on your calendar. Additional packets are available in the Assistant Principal's Office. Please note: 8th grade students who wish to participate in the activities or ceremony MUST have at least 90 behavior points by June 1st.
8th GRADE CULMINATION CALENDAR

8th GRADE ACTIVITY
On Tuesday, June 16th, the 8th graders have the opportunity to attend Golf N' Stuff for the day. The price of the event includes transportation, admission to the park, unlimited ride and golf pass, 10 tokens for the arcade and a pizza lunch. Students may purchase additional tokens and snack items at Golf N' Stuff. Students will board the buses at the start of school and will return by 3:15 p.m. The event is a great opportunity for the students to sign yearbooks as well as interact with their fellow classmates. School dress code applies to the event -- no bathing suits or flip-flops!
CULMINATION REHEARSALS
Culmination rehearsals will be held on June 15th and June 17th. Students are required to attend both rehearsals in order to participate in the culmination ceremony.
CULMINATION CEREMONY
Culmination will begin at 6:15 p.m. on Wednesday, June 17, 2009. Students need to report to their assigned rooms no later than 5:30 p.m. and be dressed in appropriate culmination attire:
Boys: Long pants (no shorts) and a collared shirt (no t-shirts). Girls: School appropriate dress. Due to the processional march over an uneven surface, girls should wear flat dress shoes (no heels or flip-flops). All students participating in the culmination ceremony will be wearing blue gowns (no caps) during the ceremony. The cost of the gown is $20.00.
Culmination is a special event and we are glad to see that students take pride in their appearance for the ceremony as well as the dance. However, formal attire such as fancy dresses or tuxedos are beyond what is appropriate for promotion into the 9th grade. Additionally, limousines are not appropriate and will not be permitted on campus to drop off or pick up students.
Culmination is an exciting time for our students as well as a milestone in their lives. Everyone is entitled to have his/her special "moment" when parents and family hear their student's name called as they take the stage. Members of the audience, as well as the students culminating, should refrain from yelling, whistling, etc. when names are called. Air horns, noise makers, beach balls, balloons, or other distractions are not appropriate during the ceremony. Don't worry, there will be ample opportunities for you to cheer for your student and the entire 8th grade class. Students are expected to remain seated and quiet during the entire ceremony. Students who disrupt the ceremony may be asked to leave the ceremony and/or denied a diploma.
Culmination is held on the far north end of campus (field behind the District Office). The District Office lot, our south parking lot and blacktop on A. E. Wright campus will be open for parking. Please note: Culmination seating will be available starting at 5:15 p.m. Parents may not reserve seating prior to 5:15 p.m.
CULMINATION PHOTOGRAPHS
For your convenience, we have made arrangements with Trackside Photo for their team of professional photographers to record the moment your child is awarded his or her diploma. You will receive in the mail a passport-sized, full color proof of your student approximately one week after the ceremony. There is no obligation to purchase the photo, but you will have the option of ordering several enlargement packages at very reasonable prices. This service will enable each student to have a photograph of his/her culmination. Therefore, family members and friends are encouraged to remain in their seats and enjoy the ceremony. Trackside Photo guarantees complete satisfaction with your photographs. If you are not satisfied with your student's picture, you will receive a full refund for any pictures ordered and returned.
CULMINATION DANCE
A culmination dance will be held on Friday, June 12th, 2009 from 7-9:00 p.m. We would like all of our culminating students to attend the dance. The dance is NOT formal; however, no t-shirts, tank tops or shorts will be allowed. Again, limousines are not appropriate for the occasion. Tickets must be purchased by the order deadline. Please make sure your child is picked up at 9:00 p.m. SHARP! 8th grade students who wish to participate in the activities or ceremony MUST have at least 90 behavior points by June 1st. Refund Requests MUST be made by May 26th. |

Parent Faculty Club Co-Presidents Message by Deborah Vangelos and Mathy Wasserman
Dear Spartan Families,
We all choose to mark time in different ways; as parents, the end of the school year marks one of the most significant milestones in a child's life. As this school year ends, we note that with our own children and all of the A.E Wright students how much they have grown and learned. The privilege of the PFC co-presidency is the opportunity we have to be involved with the school site, teachers, staff members and events. We have gotten to know most of the teachers, staff and students and have seen the positive effects that the PFC's efforts and investments have brought. The collaboration between the district, City of Calabasas, school leadership and staff and families is our success. The positive sense of community and academic achievement at A. E. Wright demonstrates why it continue to be a California Distinguished School. We thank the all PFC volunteers and families that have supported the PFC with time, finances, donations, and expressions of gratitude...you astound us and have made our job easy and enjoyable! We have had the opportunity in the newsletter over the months to thank and congratulate our committee chairpersons for each success. We would like to thank Allison Hooper for tackling the monthly challenges of an electronic newsletter and Sousan Bakhtari-Ostad for running the PFC section of the AEW website. Like the kids, we have seen dramatic changes in these areas and appreciate the extent to which you embrace the technology and pursue perfection. We look forward to your continued commitment and AEW parents' use of these great tools. Additionally, Cathy Hanzelik, with help from Nina Juels have been able to keep AEW in the forefront of people's minds with our fantastic advertising opportunities. We are grateful for your support in this area and glad you will be back next year. We extends thanks to our Feeder School Reps - Lynn Pedroza, Julie Guardhouse and Collen Korchek for communicating back to the elementary schools the enthusiasm they hold for AEW which helps to get the new families involved. The three years at AEW go quickly so we hope everyone will act as representatives in the community to assist the incoming 6th grade families to feel welcome and to participate right away. In that same vein, three years go quickly and we need to say thanks and good-bye to some of our "culminating" parents. Our Treasurer, Modj Rashidfarrukhi has served us wisely and carefully (and she does return in a couple of years); our fabulous Volunteer Coordinator, Anat Fisher too who has dedicated great time to making sure information is organized and communicated; the record-breaking Magazine Drive/Registration/8th Grade Culmination Dance Chair, Cindy Oliveras who will be missed - especially since she hardly ever said, "no" and even added work for Leadership to her responsibilities all perfectly executed; our Calabasas School Area Safety Rep, Sally Livingston who has dedicated time and energy to protect our children, improve traffic flow and traffic safety at school; our entire Fitness Celebration Team - Maristela Dunn, Laura Kotal and Jacqueline Stanford who have all put their positive energy, organization and zest for health into the successful fund and awareness raising event for the last three years; and after 8 years at AEW, our Hospitality Chair, Kati Arvanitis who has deliciously organized, baked, cooked, shopped and served for the PFC meetings, twice yearly staff luncheons and the Veteran's Day and Memorial Day brunches. It has been our privilege and we thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your time, love for AEW and dedication. To all the eighth graders, may your A. E. Wright Middle School memories remain strong as you move on to high school! To all the other students, staff and families have an awesome summer and we look forward to seeing you next year.
It is hard to believe that another school year is coming to an end. Time does fly by and summer is rapidly approaching. It has been a busy year with lots of adjustments...a new Principal, new PFC Presidents as well as concerns over state budgets for Education. Despite all this, we have accomplished so much and would like to acknowledge some of the fortunate things that have happened this year.
Happy Summer to you all! Deborah Vangelos and Mathy Wasserman AE Wright PFC Co-Presidents
