Real Estate for Real People Radio Discussion
with Dr. Amy Hymes and The Development Connection
|
My Internet surfing started at The Citadel in 1994 as I
instructed my colleagues that we can check the weather from something called
a command line prompt on a computer screen.
In addition, I told them how to look up information on other students at
other colleges on the same computer that they typed papers on. Then I really wowed them on how you can talk
to other students with something called email.
With a puzzled look, they asked me why in the world would they want to
try this so-called email thing when they can just use their calling card to
phone friends or write a letter and mail it?
Slightly more sophisticated as we can see with this message, today when I want to research something I still use The
Internet. Because I'm old school, I use Yahoo! as I'm aware that most use Google. Recently, after performing a brief search on
someone, I decided to just type my own name in and see what popped up. I was blown away to find two pages of
legitimate search results. The majority
of them came from my book. These 144
pages that were born right here in the lab (a.k.a. home office) has made their
way to China, Germany, London, Ireland, mainland US and Hawaii. Good "google"ly mooglely was all I could
say. The most impressive came from
Barnes and Noble who has created a site called "Catch a Rising Star" where
thankfully I found my book's thumbprint.
How in the world does someone who sat in remedial reading in 8th
grade and was terrified of taking pictures and speaking publicly give a speech
at Harvard in two different languages of which English was not one of
them? The derivatives of answer come in
many forms but we all know Who's in control.
In keeping the momentum flowing, I'm honored to have
received an invitation to discuss my book, Real Estate for Real People on The
Development Connection talk radio show with Dr. Amy Hymes next Monday at 3 p.m.
(www.amyhymes.com). Steve Harvey, who I
referenced in the book on page108 asked
me a few weeks ago if I was sure this was a good time to talk about real
estate. I told him this was the time to
ignore the herd mentality. The consumers
are glued to the news and scared stiff.
The providers and will be providers are studying the powers that be like
an eagle's talon to his prey. Even if
your financial situation is the worst it's ever been, you can acquire knowledge
and wisdom now that will make you a fortune later. When the dust settles, watch
the very edges of the checker board to see who declares, "King Me".
IBM's founder said there was a world market for only five
computers. Bill Gates said nobody could
possibly need more than 640K of memory.
U.S. Patent Office Commissioner Charles Duell said in 1899, "Everything
that can be invented has been invented".
Believe that nonsense if you want to.
Write your book, tell your story and remember the greatest ideas known
to man started as the most basic concept in somebody's mind.
Beginning to write a book is no different than beginning to
write an email. Let me give you six quick
guidelines:
1.
Begin the process with 15 minutes in mind. Books take months and sometimes years to complete. You're not going to finish this week but you
can start the process the second you finish reading this email.
2.
Pick a title. If
the title doesn't sum up what the book is about, add a subtitle that drives the
point home. For example, my next book is
entitled, Slide 68. The subtitle is With
the MBA and Six-Figure Salary Behind Me, I Finally Realized I was Grossly Out
of Place in my 9 to 5.
3.
Execute a search to see if anyone else has your
title. If not, at least send the title
to the Library of Congress alerting them of what your intentions are so no one
else gets to use it.
4.
There is probably some deep reason why you want to write
a book. Let an MS Word document know all
about it:)
5.
Worry about who wants to read it after you write
it. Maybe you've heard of a book or
movie detailing something about a kid named Harry Potter. It took author J.K. Rowling two agents and a
year of turn downs before a publisher made history. Last year, she earned more
than any celebrity even beating the queen of talk show hosts.
6.
Why are you still reading? Start writing!
Hey Mike Jenkins, let's write a book called Dave Chappelle
came to The Investment Forum subtitled Welcome Charlie Murphy to the China
Club!
