                                          News, Trends & Observations

Greetings!

"If all the cars in the United States were placed end to end, it would probably be Labor Day Weekend."

                         - Doug Larson

Obviously, Labor Day means different things to different people.  For most, however, it signifies the end of the summer and allows for an opportunity to reflect upon what was and what will be.  Not to get too philosophical, but when it comes to thinking about Labor Day, the truth is many of us are working harder than ever before and success can be elusive. This is further complicated by the uncertainty of events all around us. It takes a determined sense of focus and dedication to block out all the noise and overcome the challenges.

Getting back to real estate, as per our recent market updates, despite national economic turmoil the real estate markets of greater Portland area continue to show signs of improvement and resilience.  Prices remained stable in York and Cumberland County throughout the 2nd quarter 2011 and through the early summer months.

In the month of July housing volume was way up in all regions. This increase, however, is most likely attributed to the "first time homebuyer tax credit effect" that ultimately created abnormally higher volumes through June 2010 and then dramatically lower volume in July 2010.

Going forward we expect to see stable volume and pricing as rates remain low and the economy improves.

Here's wishing you a safe and spectacular Labor Day holiday.  Maybe day dreaming about cars isn't really all that bad!

Real Estate Outperforms Stock Market

Results from 2000 through 2011

Real Estate vs the Stock Market

As a follow-up to our recent post on Wall Street's wild ride, we wanted to give some thought to what real estate looked like as an investment.  Over the last few years we have heard many clients express doubts about whether owning a home was, in fact, a smart "business" decision.  When compared to the stock market, the answer is pretty self-evident.

In many ways the volatility that unsettled real estate markets over the past few years has largely subsided, leaving housing prices at their lowest level since the turn of the century.  In Maine we are in fact beginning to see some small increases.  In a clear case of over-correction, seasoned market watchers are now calling some part of the country  undervalued.

Taking a Break May Not Improve Fatigue

Your Vacation Pics Might Help!

Like a muscle, our brains appear to get fatigued after working for sustained periods of time, particularly if we have to concentrate intensely or deal with a repetitive task, says Michael Posner, an emeritus professor at the University of Oregon who studies attention.

Taking a break to stroll in a natural setting can boost performance on tasks calling for sustained focus research shows. Additionally, researchers are zeroing in on some of the circumstances that bring about optimal mental refreshment.  Learn More....

Debunking Today's Home Buying Myths

Home Buying MythsMyths, fables and fairy tales are stories with a purpose.   They try to to explain the way the world is, and over time are expanded, elaborated and of course embellished.

There are myths that surround almost every aspect of our lives and home buying is no exception.   Although they might not be "magical" in nature, they do include a fair amount of hyperbole.

If you are currently in the market to buy a home (or will be in the near future) below are a few of these myths that we encounter every day.  The uncertainty of our current economic situation and the overall condition of the housing market elevates these to new heights.  Although they might not be "magical" in nature, they do include a fair amount of hyperbole. But what's important is sifting the myths from the truths and only concentrating on the truths.

Listening and following myths can actually harm your home buying efforts, including costing you extra - and that's not a myth. Here are some myths that need exploding.  Learn More...
