Greetings!
How was that for the first storm of the year? Only maybe two inches, but a real mess. For those of you not in Maine, we were hit with a very unexpected squall right during Monday evening rush hour that caught the city off guard. I guess the golf clubs can finally make their annual trip to the basement - looks like no last minute rounds are in the immediate future.
Did you know that the sending of commercially produced greeting cards at Christmas began in the Victorian era? In 1843 Sir Henry Cole, director of the Victoria and Albert Museum, commissioned John Callcott Horsely, a fashionable artist of the time, to design the initial card. 1,000 lithograph Christmas cards were printed and put on sale in London. Thus began the tradition which you might be struggling to complete as you read this today!
Original copies of this first card are quite rare - and valuable. One was reportedly sold in 2005 for £9,000.
Although the period between Thanksgiving and New Year's is traditionally a slower time for real estate and business in general, the level of activity is exceeding our expectations. We currently have properties under contract through the beginning of February.
Despite the dire warnings of many national prognosticators (see article below), there continues to be a healthy level of showings and under contracts not only in our office, but across southern Maine. This is especially true of what could be considered the "middle market". Not only is pricing up for homes priced over $500,000 (3.9%), but volume is also up statewide 15.4% YD compared to 2009. Focusing on Cumberland County, single family homes sales, in this same price range, are up 18.1% and pricing is up 5.8%. Additional market information is included in the story below.
We continue to be cautiously optimistic about 2011.
Finally, thank you to everyone who participated in our drawing for a copy of "Five". The winners were Paula from CT and LeeAnn from ME. We hope they find the same inspiration we did in this small, but powerful book.
We wish you a happy holiday season and thank you for your continued support - it is greatly appreciated.

Zeitgeist 2010 The Year in Review
The term Zeitgeist is from German words Zeit meaning "time" and Geist meaning "spirit" thus creating the term: "the spirit of the times". Zeitgeist is most commonly referred to as the general cultural, intellectual, ethical, spiritual, and/or political climate within a nation or group, reflecting the general ambiance, morals, sociocultural direction, and mood associated with an era. We have included a copy of the Google video "Year in Review" in a recent blog post. This video was created from Google's most popular searches of 2010. In a few minutes you quickly find yourself reminiscing about the year just past - a lot sure happened. Learn More....

Portland on NBC Today Prices Better than National Average
$1.7 trillion lost in 2010! According to reports that is the total value drop in residential real estate this year, coming after an estimated $1 trillion drop in 2009 and a total of $9 trillion since the market's peak in 2006. In many ways these number are hard to comprehend, especially as they relate to our own little corner of the world.
As the end of the year approaches, everyone on the national scene has a prediction for the future. In most cases it seems that being the loudest and having the boldest estimate of the future is more important than being right! Talking about negative issues always get more press than insightful comments.
In any case, if you happen to watch the Today Show you might be familiar with Barbara Corcoran, the self-appointed national real estate expert. Learn More...

World's Most Expensive Tree Abu Dhabi Hotel Looks to Set World Record
If you happen to be an oil rich country with more money than you know what to do with, then a Guinness World Record might be in your future.
The Emirates Palace hotel in Abu Dhabi is planning to have the Christmas tree in their lobby certified as the World's most expensive.
According to general manager Hans Olbertz, the tree itself is worth a paltry $10,000 while the jewelry that serves as ornamentation brings the value to just over $11 million.
Along with stars and lights, all kinds of fancy jewelry adorn the 43 foot tree. There are also bracelets, necklaces and watches along with precious stones (181 in total) including diamonds, pearls, emeralds and sapphires. The tree is in the center of a sumptuous lobby, which is reportedly decorated with gold leaf.
Each year the hotel has a tree, Mr. Olbertz confessed in an interview with thd AP, but this year's endeavor was designed as a marketing effort to promote the oil-rich United Arab Emirates (UAE). Learn More...
