Traditional Product Reports
Restore Media (publishers of Old House Journal, Traditional Building, and Period Homes along with many other avenues to promote traditional trades and preservation) has developed a web site devoted to reports on traditional products.
These reports are complied on a web site (http://www.traditionalproductreports.com/) and are available by subscribing to their newsletter. There are articles about the products, case studies, installation/treatment tips, and where to buy the replacement products. The topics include:
- doors
- windows
- hardware
- interior finishes/fixtures
- metalworking
- timber frame
- and many more ...
This is a valuable resource complied in a central location for anyone interested in restoring or preserving their own historic building.

I am new to social networking - I finally have a FaceBook page - one of my favorite features is to be a "fan" of someone or something. Essentially you click become a fan and are treated to updates about your favorite television show, cause, or event - for example.
What does my entrance into social networking have to do with sustainability? I am a fan of the National Preservation Trust and this week Patrice Frey (the director of sustainability research for the National Trust for Historic Preservation) posted an article about sustainability for fans of the National Trust.
There where three main points to determine if a product/building is green - to help people wade through all of the greenwashing (products promoted as green that might not be the "greenest" solution):
- Is the product made without toxic materials and with longevity in mind?
- Is is maintainable?
- Is is reused or recycled so there is no waste?
At the Traditional Building conference in March the things we heard over and over were that existing buildings are green, the products must be maintainable (repairable) and durable. Something to keep in mind when maintaining your own building.
I recommend becoming a fan of the National Preservation Trust - a couple of times a week you will get updates, news, and articles related to current preservation trends.
