New Lead Paint Regulations
The EPA has mandated new lead paint regulations. These regulations will be effective April 2010 the aim is to decrease childhood lead poisoning. After April 2010 contractors that disturb (repair, remodeling, maintenance (including window replacement), electric, and plumbing) lead-based paint must be certified by the EPA.
This new rule covers anyone that works in buildings built before 1978 - specifically with children under six and pregnant women within the building (homes, day-care facilities, and schools).
After April 2010 any contractor disturbing lead-based paint will be required to provide you with their certificate (showing they have been trained in the proper techniques to minimize lead exposure) and the Renovate Right booklet explaining lead-based paint, risks, and ways to reduce the risks.
Ways to Protect Your Family Right Now
- Regularly clean floors, window sills, and other woodwork (lead can accumulate in the dust).
- Wash children's hands, bottles, pacifiers, and toys often.
- Eating a healthy, nutritious diet helps protect from the effects of lead.
- Wipe shoes before entering the house.
