Greetings!

December is always a busy month - this month's newsletter is devoted to helping you remember simple ways you can continue maintaining your older building.

We are in the process of sending out the company Christmas cards this week.  We have enclosed a coupon for early class registration with the cards for those of you on our regular mailing list.  If you are just on our e-newsletter list I have added the same coupon to the bottom of this newsletter.

Have a Happy Holiday!

Preservation is Maintenance

Preventative maintenance on your older building if done on a regular basis will save considerable headaches and money in the long run.  Usually we are called when the only option is restoration of a missing feature.  Although many features are removed during a "modernization" phase of the building's life many more are lost due to lack of maintenance.

The most damage to a building occurs when the elements are allowed to either enter the building or deteriorate an exterior architectural detail.  One of the most important things you can do as an older building owner is to make sure that the building envelope is secure.  This includes the roof, flashing, wood siding, window/door frames, gutter/downspouts along with proper storm water management, window repair, painting (to protect the wood below), and keeping up with stone/brick pointing using lime based mortar.  Insuring these tasks are completed will help to protect the craftsmanship, details, and materials we all love in our older buildings.

We have Managing Maintenance for Older and Historic Buildings available for sale for $15.00 plus postage and handling.  This practical restoration report provides steps for maintaining an older building and a evaluation checklist to take around your building to insure nothing is forgotten.  More information about this practical restoration report is also available in the store section of our web site at http://www.historic-restorations.com/store.html.
