Simple Ways to Improve Energy Efficiency
Greetings!

With energy prices and interest in green building making your older building energy efficient is a concern for most older building owners.  This interest is important for both your pocketbook and the plant.  In this issue we are offering information so that when you are faced with salespeople and the marketing of new "energy efficient" products you have the knowledge to make informed decisions based at least in part on what would be the most historically sensitive to your building.

If you are looking for someone to come and help you evaluate your personal energy usage there is a local company Pure Energy that performs energy audits, winterization advice, energy bill analysis, plus many other services.  Pure Energy's service area is Pennsylvania, Delaware, and New Jersey.  You can find out more about this company at their website www.pureenergyaudits.com.

Sincerely,

Danielle Keperling

Simple Ways to Improve Energy Efficiency
When of making your older building energy efficient one of the main preservation goals is to not jeopardize the character of the building and to make sure the investment you make is a reasonable cost for the return (energy savings).

Simple Things You Can Do Before Winter to Save Energy:

Seal Air Leaks - Caulking/Sealing cracks where interior and exterior surfaces meet.

If you have a fireplace make sure to close the damper when the fireplace is not in use.  Custom dampers are available if you have an opening that is not "standard" size from
www.controlcover.com.

Make sure at places where the HVAC systems ventilate or utility lines penetrate the walls that the gaps are sealed and joints are tight.

Repoint masonry at the foundation if cracks are visible.

Insulate the attic, basement, and crawl space.  Never stuff insulation tight you need to allow for air and moisture to escape.

Traditional windows and wood doors can offer energy savings comparable to the new replacements.  make sure that you have weather-stripping and underdoor sweeps.  The most energy is lost around the door and window frames - make sure those intersections are sealed.  Our July newsletter focused on ways to make older windows energy efficient - let us know if you would like another copy of that newsletter.
