Dear Fellow Multisport Enthusiasts ,

Welcome to our second F.A.S.T. Multisport Newsletter. It is our hope that you enjoyed and benefited from the advice provided in our inaugural issue. Given we are now in September it is likely you have some rewarding races to look back on and are looking forward to one more Duathlon to round out the year. See Midwest Sports Events for information on 3 great Duathlon races they will be hosting this fall. Also look for some late season runs and see our section entitled "what's happening" for more fun.

Triathlon Training Tip                                                     # 2

Background
F.A.S.T. Multisport Tip

With the Triathlon season coming to a close and your focus turning to Duathlons it is tempting to switch your focus to running and biking and forget about the pool for a little bit. After all your "honey do" list now fills 3 legal pads, your behind at work, the lake is getting cold and getting to the pool is the most time consuming part of your training.
This was my thinking in August of 2007. I did the Oshkosh Triathlon and used the same logic as above to blow off swimming. This I did until early December.
Swimming is unlike any other sport in the muscle groups and gross motor patterns used. Walking, hiking, biking and running all use similar muscles and involve similar patterns of movement. Swimming freestyle is 80% upper body and involves a great deal of transverse plain or rotational core work. As a result a couple months off, even for the seasoned swimmer, can result in your feeling exhausted after just a 100.
At F.A.S.T. we advise our clients to keep a "feel" for the water. Schedule 1-2 swim seasons a week. They need not be anaerobic threshold sessions, however an aerobic straight set and a few drill sets will go a long way toward ensuring you maintain that swim flow you worked so hard to achieve.

Sincerely,
