I receive a newsletter from Knitting Daily of Interweave Press and the December 30, 2011 issue had this article."Tips for Hat Knitting - For more rounded top shaping, work the tip decreases every other round or every three rounds.
- If you don't want to knit a hat in the round and you don't mind a visible seam on the finished hat, work it back and forth in a single piece and seam the back.
- Work the inside of a hemmed edge in cotton to make it more comfortable against sensitive skin.
- To make a hat wind- and water-resistant, work the yarn at a smaller gauge (more stitches per inch) than recommended. For example, use smaller needles to work a worsted weight yarn at six stitches to the inch. (You'll need to cast on more stitches for this approach, so use your gauge swatch to determine the additional number of stitches needed.)"
We have lots of wonderful hat patterns, both books and patterns. For individual patterns some of what we have are: Ursule and Victor by Kate Gilbert Gaugeless Hat, Family of Toques, Color Me Bright, Snowflake Swirl Hat, Head Huggers and Spiral Rib Hat by Ann Norling. These patterns use different gauges and sizes. Hats that Fit by Nancy Lindberg - nine different hat styles using a basic formula. Super Cupcake and Mondo Cable Cap by Chic Knits.

Free Patterns
Since I am going to be a first time granny this summer, I have been looking at patterns for babies, which includes knitted toys. And what a mistake that has been. I will try not to overwhelm you with my exciting finds, but here are some of them:
Koala Baby - this is knitted with DK yarn. Loyal is a washable wool in a DK weight and we have the perfect grey and white for it.
Or what about the Teddy pattern from Ravelry? This also uses DK weight, so Loyal and Tonic would be a good choice.
And since it now looks like winter is really here, the Northmoor Watchcap on Ravelry is a new take on the basic watch cap design. The pattern calls for Mission Falls 1824 Wool which is now on sale at the shoppe. You may also substitute Lamb's Pride worsted, and Nature Spun worsted.
And for a quick, luxurious knit, knit the Foot Ovens by the Yarn Harlot in Misti Alpaca Chunky. This warm sock pattern is located on Ravelry.
