15 Etiquette
Rules for a
Brave New World

“O
brave new world that has such people in it!”- John
Savage; Brave New World, by Aldous Huxley
It is a brave new
world and technology is sometimes changing faster than we
can keep up. However unlike Huxley’s fictional account of
the future, technology is bringing us exciting new
opportunities and we have the freedom to decide what is
appropriate or crosses the line. With that said, there are
some basic technology manners we should all remember.

1. |
|
Probably
the most basic, but most often forgotten rule is to
silence your phone in theaters, places of worship, and
meetings. |
|
2. |
|
In this
age of electronic devices, if you want to let someone
know how important they are, try a face to face. Let’s
remember that only in person can you read a person’s
body language and facial expressions. Even web cameras
cannot catch all the nuances unique to face to face
communication. The fact that you took time out of your
busy schedule to actually come and see someone will also
hit the mark. |

10 Ways to Work More
Securely
used with permission from
Microsoft At Work
The security of
your computer and data is crucial for you and the success of
your company. Lost or stolen information can reveal company
secrets, or expose your confidential or personal
information. The more you do to keep your computer secure,
the safer your information will be. Use these 10 tips to
learn ways you can help protect your computer, your data,
and your company's network.
1. Work with
your IT department
Make sure that you install all of the patches and updates
that your IT department recommends. In addition to
installing Windows and Office updates, your IT department
might require you to install additional security software,
such as a firewall or custom software to help you connect
from remote locations. Making these regular installations
will keep your computer and your company's network as secure
as possible.

Make Social Networking Work: 7 Tips
by Christopher Elliott
reprinted with permission from the Microsoft Small Business Center
Social
networking sites like Facebook, MySpace and Twitter connect millions of
like-minded people every day through the Web. But did you know they also
can help your small business connect with customers?
"Social networking can help
promote a small business in two ways," says Susan Barnes, a professor
and associate director for at Rochester Institute of Technology's Lab
for Social Computing. "Loyal customers can create small networks and
provide testimonials for the business and employees can share
information with each other through social networks."
More than half of all
small-business owners believe social networking sites have a place
in the business world, according to a 2008 survey by SurePayroll. And
one in five companies has generated business from a social media site.
