Greetings!
Greetings!
With the opening of the Year of Faith, the Synod on New Evangelization and Mission Sunday later in October, mission is in the spot light. Which is great, however, we might be better to think of mission as the spot light itself.
Emil Brunner said
"The church exists by missions like fire exists by burning."
Another way to say this is that the church does not have a mission, but rather, the mission has a church. The Vatican II document on mission makes clear that the pilgrim church is missionary by its very nature.
The job of continuing the mission of Jesus is given to all who are baptized, not just the few who head off to Tanzania or Bolivia. The challenge then is how to develop a spirituality grounded in that mission, so that mission is incorporated into every relationship and every action.
Not an easy task, all other things considered; and probably only happens when we come together as community to support and encourage each other.
Here's some opportunities for you to get your missionary on this month: We have our Mission Education Training Program on Oct. 19-21, Deacon Matt will be speaking on the Vatican II Document on Mission on October 16th and we have a new program to help parishes become more mission focused: From Maintenance to Mission, Engaging in the Mission of Jesus.
Movie Night will be at Newman Hall Holy Spirit Parish in Berkeley. We'll be showing a documentary on martyr Franz Jagerstatter followed by a reflection.
Finally, and certainly not least, the Maryknoll Sisters continue their Centennial Celebration with a talk and reading by Sr. Claudette LaVerdiere, MM from her award winning book "On the Threshold of the Future, the Life and Spirituality of Mother Mary Rogers." This will begin at 4 pm this Sunday, October 14th at the Maryknoll Regional Center and will be followed by a Ritual Celebration and Potluck Supper. Copies of the book will be available for purchase.
We've also revamped our website with new mission education resources. Check it out at: www.maryknoll.us
We are here to help you and work together to better live out our call to Christ's mission. I look forward to hearing from you.
Peace,
Kris

Movie Night at Newman Hall:
Franz Jägerstätter
When: October 22, 2012, 7:00pm - 9:00pm
Where: Newman Hall Holy Spirit Parish
2700 Dwight Way (at College Ave.)
Berkeley, CA 94704
Join the Nonviolent Peacemaking Group at Newman Hall for a showing of a documentary film about Franz Jägerstätter and an interview with Bishop Thomas Gumbleton on the Just War Theory.
Franz Jägerstätter, an Austrian farmer, devoted husband and father, and devout Catholic, was executed in 1943 for refusing to serve in the Nazi army. For many years Jägerstätter's solitary witness was honored by the Catholic peace movement. Now, with his beatification in 2007, his example has been embraced by the universal church.
Following the two films Kris East, Mission Promoter for the Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers, will lead a guided reflection and discussion.

From Maintenance to Mission; Engaging in the Mission of Jesus!
At Pentecost, the mission of Jesus received a Church, a community of men and woman filled with the Holy Spirit, who left the comfort and safety of the upper room to venture out into the streets of Jerusalem. From there the spark of God's love spread like wildfire.
Today, more than ever, people need the Good News of God's love. From our closest relationships, to our own parishes, to our local communities and even to far corners of the world we are called to leave the comfort of our upper rooms, cross borders and follow in the footsteps of Jesus.

Taize Prayer Gathering
Second
Wednesday of the Month
at 7 pm
Taize is a meditative common prayer using song, chants, scripture, reflection and periods of contemplative silence, a prayer that does not end, but continues in the silence of the heart. Within this sacred space one is drawn into a deeper awareness of God's presence; it is a prayerful opportunity for self-reflection.
Contemplative prayer is seen as a critical path in mission. It is through prayer that we are connected with God and it is in the silence of our hearts that God communicates and shares with us God's mission of love for the world.
Taize will be held the second Wednesday of every month in the Chapel at the Maryknoll Center at 16642 Ashland Avenue, San Lorenzo.
The hour long service will start at 7:00 p.m. with Ruth Picha. Ruth is a Spiritual Director, who trained at Mercy Center in Burlingame.

Mission Defines Us
"We do not define God's mission. It defines us. It tells us who we are, what our mission is, how we are to do ministry, worship, spirituality, evangelism. There is no aspect of the Christian life, thought, and ministry that is not connected with God's mission to the world.
As Jesus sends the Holy Spirit, so the Spirit fills the Church, sends it forth, and remains within it always serving Christ, the chief minister of the church."
