News from Maryknoll Northwest |
Greetings!
Greetings!
October is an exciting month for mission! Not only do we celebrate World Mission Sunday on the 21st, but October 11th marks the 50th anniversary of the Second Vatican Council. The Council reclaimed and articulated the notion that, as Christians, we "cherish a feeling of deep solidarity" with people all over the world, "especially those who are poor or afflicted in any way." 50 years later, so many of us are still discovering Christ through our relationship with the poor and disadvantaged.
This month, I travel to Haiti with a group from St. Anthony's Parish in Renton, WA. They are embarking on a sister parish relationship and we are making our first visit. Right now, two local Affiliates are preparing to serve as Maryknoll Lay Missioners, one in Tanzania and one in Cambodia. Two other Affiliates are making their annual return to Tanzania, this time bringing along a newcomer. As you read this, teachers are discerning whether to embark on a Maryknoll Immersion this summer, while other teachers are excited to integrate their recent immersion experience into the classroom.
As always, we provide below examples of how you and people that you know can receive the gift of mission - the gift of sight, of profound joy, and of family with brothers and sisters that we may never have known.
Peace,
Kevin Foy and the Maryknoll Team

2013 Immersions for Catholic Educators

Teachers, catechists, and youth ministers play a key role in helping students to grow in Christ's love and experience the world beyond their borders. Through Maryknoll's Teacher Immersion Program, Catholic educators have the opportunity to find God in new and unexpected places, and to bring that experience back to their students.

World Mission Sunday
World Mission Sunday will be observed in every nation on earth on the weekend of October 20-21. There are more than 1,150 mission dioceses and territories in our world that depend on annual subsidies from the Society for the Propagation of the Faith, and on the prayers of all of us. Even the poorest parishes provide financial assistance for mission work beyond their borders.
Our prayer and donations benefit dioceses that cannot yet provide for their own pastoral services, much as we in this archdiocese were supported by Catholics in other lands until 1908!
Mission is so central to the Gospel and the needs are so urgent that we strongly encourage you to participate in a Mission Sunday Mass at your parish.

Reflection:
Option for the Poor
"When a person or group makes [the option for the poor] authentically, they find it possible and necessary to view the world 'from the underside'...Many actions that seem necessary and sensible to the people 'at the top' are experienced by those 'at the bottom' as quite outrageously unjust, oppressive, and wrong."
from Option for the Poor and for the Earth
Catholic Social Teaching, by Donal Dorr
What actions might seem 'necessary and sensible' to us, but 'oppressive and wrong' to those with fewer means? How does recognizing and addressing those actions give us new life?
