Greetings!

Happy New Year!

Now that many of us are returning to work, school, or simply post-holiday life, it's a good time to renew ourselves in our loving relationship with God and neighbor.  Between mid-November and late December, we at the Maryknoll Mission House received many calls from local people asking if we could somehow help with basic needs such as food, energy bills, and rent.  In this time of great joy and renewal, it serves as a reminder that Jesus comes to us most profoundly in the form of those in need - and in our world, nation, and local communities, these needs are truly many and varied.

We have a tendency to give much during the month between Thanksgiving and Christmas - of our time, energy, patience, and even our finances (I heard of one organization that receives as much as 85% of its donations during the holidays!).  Although this is to be commended, it is all too easy to lose sight of that joy and generosity of spirit once the gifts have been exchanged and the New Year's celebrations are completed.  We get bogged down in our own concerns, problems, and seemingly endless lists of tasks.  However, by holding onto and continually renewing that joy, faith, and love, we are ultimately sustained and enlivened throughout the year and our lives.

With that fundamental truth in mind, we at Maryknoll are glad to renew our own efforts at advancing God's love in the world in what little way that we can.  As you know, Maryknoll serves and collaborates with people in need throughout Asia, Africa, and Latin America.  We also, though, are committed to inspiring and forming the church here at home in answering the mission call to solidarity, peace, and justice rooted in the love of God.  In the opportunities and information posted below, we hope that we can offer some sense of renewal and strength to you in this call to mission, just as you so often renew and strengthen us in our efforts.  Thank you, as always for your commitment to mission and support of Maryknoll!

Peace,

Mission Education Training Program

April 27th-29th

Mission Education Training

With baptism, we are all called to participate in the mission of Jesus.  But how many Catholics are aware of this and formed for mission, whether at home or around the world?

One of the first things Jesus did with his disciples was to send them out in pairs to do what he did.  To do mission.   Jesus passed this mission on to his disciples and for almost two thousand years the mission has passed down from generation to generation.

We are excited to offer a Mission Education Training Session for teachers*, principals*, DREs, lay ecclesial ministers, catechists, deacons and  priests.   Incorporate a stronger sense of mission into your ministerial identity and spirituality.  Develop skills and resources to integrate mission into your ministry and programs.  Help your students and parishioners come alive in their faith as you animate and support them in their calling to take part in the mission of Jesus.

(*Now certified for clock hours by the Catholic Schools Department of the Archdiocese of Seattle)

Four two-hour sessions over the course of the weekend at our Maryknoll Mission House in Seattle.

Mission Forum Reminder

Friday, January 6th

Of Gods and Men

This striking film is based on the true story of monks living and serving with a Muslim community in Algeria in the mid-1990's.  As civil war encroaches upon their community and threatens not only their work, but their very lives, they must decide how far they will go to serve their call to love and stand with God's people.

The Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers and the Missions Office of the Archdiocese of Seattle are pleased to invite you to attend a Mission Forum on Friday, January 6th at 6:30pm at the Maryknoll Mission House.  We will view the film "Of Gods and Men," with optional discussion to follow.

Mission Forum features speakers and films uniquely chosen to shed light on issues relating to mission, including solidarity, peace, justice, and witness to the Gospel.

Guatemala Immersion for Teachers

Boys at Monte Maria

Enrollment is open for our Short-Term Immersion for Teachers this summer, open to teachers in Catholic schools and any teacher of the Catholic faith.

Why do we go on short-term immersions?

It is often our tendency when considering a mission trip to ask, "What will we do?"  In many ways, though, these trips are about opening our eyes and hearts.  Thus, we must first ask, "Why do we go?"

  • For OUR OWN conversion in how we view and live our lives
  • In yearning to see, listen, and hear in ways that we can not easily do at home
  • To answer a call to solidarity by beginning to form bonds and understand our roles as friends of and advocates for our brothers in sisters across borders

(Read more about Why We Go)

Why Teacher Immersion?

Teachers serve a pivotal role in forming students in responding to the call to love, peace, solidarity, and justice.  Through the Teacher Immersion Program, Maryknoll helps teachers bring experiences of school, family, and faith from across the globe back to their students in order to respond to this call.

Mary Ryan-Hotchkiss and Manny Hotchkiss are members of the Portland, OR Chapter of the Maryknoll Affiliates.  This passage comes from their response to a survey conducted for Maryknoll's Centennial Celebration.  (Learn more about the Maryknoll Affiliates.)

"We have been to Venezuela, Peru, Mexico, and Israel/Palestine, abroad, in connection with Maryknoll for short visits.  We participated in an Engineers Without Borders project in Guatemala, helping to set up water collection systems.  The shortage of potable water in all of these areas has most strongly shocked us.  Even in a semitropical area like Guatemala, which appeared to have ample rainfall, the women had to walk long distances to get even poor quality water.  We continue to be conscious of the vast amounts of water we use in the rain-blessed northwest, and try to conserve knowing that even if water is plentiful, energy and chemicals are consumed in providing that water to us."

 A Calling

  Maryknoll Book of Inspiration

"God calls all the souls he has created to love him with their whole being, here and thereafter, which means that he calls all of them to holiness, to perfection, to a close following of him and obedience to his will. But he does not ask all souls to show their love by the same works, to climb to heaven by the same ladder, to achieve goodness in the same way.

"What sort of work, then, must I do?...In what kind of life am I to sanctify myself?...This question: 'What kind of life am I going to undertake?' is the question of vocation."
