Greetings!
The Gift of Mission! This theme for the Centennial was echoed at our west coast celebrations in Los Altos, Los Angeles, and Seattle. All of the celebrations were joy-filled and the Spirit of God was definitely present in each location. The work that Maryknoll has been privileged to do around the world for the last 100 years could not have been possible without the faithful and generous support of all of our friends, benefactors and collaborators. You are responsible for the success!

Thank you to Bishops John Cummins and Richard Garcia for joining us in celebrating Mass in Los Altos along with Fr. Bill Boteler, celebrant, Fr. Leo Shea, homilist and Fr. Bob Carleton and Deacon Matt Dulka for making introductions. Thanks also to Malcolm and 3D Catering of Newark and the Hispanic Choir at Our Lady of Guadalupe in San Jose.
There are still a couple spots left for the Mission Education Training Program Oct. 21-23. Details here. Also, we will be at the diocesan conferences in Fresno and Santa Clara in the coming months. Stop by to say "hi."
If you are not getting the Maryknoll Magazine or REVISTA, sign up by Nov. 30th and enter the drawing for the new Kindle Fire (to read Orbis books, of course) or a $200 Amazon Gift Certificate. Details here.
We look forward to partnering with you to bring the Good News to all of God's people, wherever they may be in the next 100 years.
We look forward to being in touch.
Peace,
Kris and the Maryknoll Team |

Movie Night: The Flowers of St. Francis
Tuesday, October 18 at 7pm
Maryknoll Regional Center Common Room
Starting with their return in the rain to Rivotorlo from Rome when the Pope blessed their Rule and ending with their dispersal to preach, this film's chapters play out like parables. Humble Francis doubts his leadership, hugs a leper, and sends his brothers spinning, dizzy, and smiling into the world. In Italian with English subtitles, 75min.
Discussion to follow.

Mission Education Training Session

Friday October 21, 2011 at 6 PM
-to- Sunday October 23, 2011 at 12 PM
With baptism, we are all called to participate in the mission of Jesus. But how many Catholics are aware of this and formed for mission, whether at home or around the world?
One of the first things Jesus did with his disciples was to send them out in pairs to do what he did. To do mission. Jesus passed this mission on to his disciples and for almost two thousand years the mission has passed down from generation to generation. We are excited to offer a Mission Education Training Session for teachers, principals, DREs, lay ecclesial ministers, catechists, deacons and priests. Incorporate a stronger sense of mission into your ministerial identity and spirituality. Develop skills and resources to integrate into your ministry and programs. Help your students and parishioners come alive in their faith as you animate and support them in their calling to take part in the mission of Jesus.
Four two-hour sessions over the course of the weekend at our Maryknoll Regional Center in San Lorenzo. Overnight accommodations available.
- Session 1: Scriptural and Historical Foundations of Mission
- Session 2: Models and Methods of Mission Today, Maryknoll History and Charism
- Session 3: The Spirituality of Mission Education
- Session 4: Developing and Implementing Mission Education Components
Each participant will receive a Mission Resource Kit, including the book, What is the Mission of the Church?, sample posters and study guides, DVDs and more.
A donation of $100 is suggested to cover the costs of accommodation and materials, but we understand the financial constraints on those working for the Church and we are happy to host you as our gift.

Taize Prayer Gathering
Second
Wednesday of the Month
at 7 pm
Taize is a meditative common prayer using song, chants, scripture, reflection and periods of contemplative silence, a prayer that does not end, but continues in the silence of the heart. Within this sacred space one is drawn into a deeper awareness of God's presence; it is a prayerful opportunity for self-reflection.
Contemplative prayer is seen as a critical path in mission. It is through prayer that we are connected with God and it is in the silence of our hearts that God communicates and shares with us God's mission of love for the world.
Taize will be held the second Wednesday of every month in the Chapel at the Maryknoll Center at 16642 Ashland Avenue, San Lorenzo. The hour long service will start at 7:00 p.m. with Ruth Picha. Ruth is a Spiritual Director, who trained at Mercy Center in Burlingame. |
Education Resources
Catechists, Teachers, RCIA Leaders, DREs, we're here to help YOU!
One of the most time consuming aspects of educating is lesson plan preparation and gathering resources. We've done that for you! We have lesson plans developed by an educator on topics such as the current drought situation in Somalia, World Malaria Day, Mission Songs and more. Lesson plans are developed for grade school, middle school and high school/adult grade levels. Best of all, they're free!

Reflection
Our Sisters the Birds are Singing God's Praises
He came to a certain place near Bevagna where a very great number of birds of various kinds had congregated, namely, doves, crows, and some others popularly called daws. When the most blessed servant of God, Francis, saw them, being a man of very great fervor and great tenderness toward lower and irrational creatures, he left his companions in the road and ran eagerly toward the birds.
When he was close enough to them, seeing that they were waiting expectantly for him, he greeted them in his usual way. But not a little surprised that the birds did not rise in flight, as they usually do, he was filled with great joy and humbly begged them to listen to the Word of God.
