News from Maryknoll Northwest

Greetings!

We often fall into the trap of focusing on faith as solely a solitary endeavor - how I pray, what I believe, even who I help.  But looking back over the past month, it is abundantly clear that faith, especially as it is exemplified in mission, is communal.  This truth shines brightly and clearly in the history of Maryknoll itself, as celebrated at our Centennial Celebration on September 25th: It is fitting that the initial seed for the Catholic Foreign Mission Society of the United States formed not in one, but two people - Father James Walsh and Father Thomas Price - joined together as disciples of Christ's mission call.

It is fitting that the Maryknoll parish in Seattle, Our Lady Queen of Martyrs, was staffed by both the Maryknoll Sisters and the Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers, and run in true solidarity with the Japanese- and Filipino-Americans to whom it was home.  It is fitting, too, that when the Japanese-Americans of this parish were sent to internment camps in the 1940's, the Maryknollers followed, ministering with them in their time of great need.

It is fitting also that, in Maryknoll Father Pete Byrne's homily at the Centennial Mass, the many branches of the Maryknoll Family - the Fathers and Brothers, the Sisters, the Lay Missioners, the Affiliates, and our generous benefactors - were each highlighted, their contributions helping to build the Kingdom, and their presence enlivening our celebration. A celebration that came together so beautifully due not to the work of any one man or woman, but through the collaboration of Maryknoll, St. James Cathedral, the Archdiocese of Seattle, former members of Our Lady Queen of Martyrs Parish, former Lay Missioners, Maryknoll Affiliates, and all of our friends and supporters.

Above all, it is fitting and exciting that Maryknoll's long history of collaboration and community in Seattle and the Northwest continues to this day.  It continues with the gathering of parishioners, deacons, priests, educators, and others at our Mission Symposium on October 2nd.  It continues with the inspiring work of the winners of our 2011 Youth on Mission Contest, and the fact that we are working with the Catholic Schools Department and the Missions Office of the Archdiocese of Seattle to introduce our 2012 contest later this month.  This collaboration continues also with our immersion and formation outreach to local teachers.

This tradition is present, as well, in the many local men and women that have spent time as overseas missioners.  As part of our Centennial Celebration, we collected some of their stories, and will begin to share them in this newsletter each month.  (Thank you to Corinna Laughlin of St. James Cathedral for compiling these!)

Looking forward, we should remember always that the mission of Christ is lived through solidarity and community, and through the sharing of faith, love, and resources.  Sunday, October 23rd, is World Mission Sunday, "a day set aside for Catholics worldwide to recommit themselves to the Church's missionary activity" (Pontifical Mission Societies in the United States).  We have highlighted Pope Benedict XVI's World Mission Sunday message below, and hope that you can join us in renewing our zeal for the infinite love, peace, and justice of Christ.

Thank you all again for your support, friendship, and commitment to mission.  Only through you is the work of Maryknoll possible.  If you know of anyone that might want to stay connected by receiving these mailings, please so that he or she can sign up.

Peace,

Special thanks to the members of our Centennial Planning Committee, without whom this event would not have been possible: Dorothy Cordova, Sister Joyce Cox, BVM, J.L. Drouhard, Corinna Laughlin, Father Paul Magnano, John McCoy, Dr. Janey Quillian, Father Michael G. Ryan, and Pauline Yaguchi.  Thanks also to Father Pete Byrne, MM, for a stirring and passionate homily.

MissionSymposium

Global Mission Symposium at Seattle University

Mission Symposium
Fr. Roger Schroeder, SVD, presents on Global Mission.

Thank you to Fr. Roger Schroeder, SVD, for his presentation on Mission in the Global Context.  Among other things, Dr. Schroeder highlighted the necessity of mission as Prophetic Dialogue - dialogue, in that it listens to and respects the people, cultures, religions, and/or secular tradition with which it engages;  Prophetic in that it attests, in word and in deed, to the infinite love, truth, and salvation of the Lord.

Thank you to all of the parishioners, teachers, deacons, lay missioners, Maryknoll Affiliates, and others who attended.

This symposium was sponsored by the Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers, the Missions Office of the Archdiocese of Seattle, and the Seattle University School of Theology and Ministry.

Tales from Local Missioners

Patrick Higgins was a Maryknoll Priest Associate in the 1980's.

"Our family always received Maryknoll Magazine, and it interested me/us in mission.  My father had a Marine Corps friend from WWII who became a Vincentian missionary priest in Panama.  After a few years as a New York diocesan priest in inner-city Latino neighborhoods, I looked into mission work in Spanish-speaking countries (to perfect my language abilities) and was permitted to become a Maryknoll Associate.

I served in Bolivia, in the Vicariate of Pando and Cochabamba.  The diocesan experience in principally Latino and African-American areas of New York City somewhat prepared me for Latin America.  The topography, indigenous cultures, flora, and altitude were a new experience, of course.  In the mid 1980's in Bolivia, inflation was rampant and the value of the currency depreciated almost hourly.  Walking around with four pockets full of 100 Bolivianos notes that were worth, collectively, about $1.50, with rising prices adjusting to the U.S. dollar was certainly a culture - and wallet - 'shock'.  On the very positive side, the warmth, beauty, and gentleness of the Bolivian people, added to the spectacular beauty of their country, was shockingly inspiring."

World Mission Day Message

"Evangelization is a complex process and entails various elements. Among them missionary animation has always paid special attention to solidarity. This is also one of the objectives of World Mission Day which, through the Pontifical Mission Societies, requests aid in order to carry out the tasks of evangelization in mission territories. It is a matter of supporting institutions necessary for establishing and consolidating the Church through catechists, seminaries and priests, and of making one's own contribution to improving the standard of living for people in countries where the phenomena of poverty, malnutrition - especially among children - disease, the lack of health care and education are the most serious."
-Pope Benedict XVI

In his 2011 World Mission Day Message, Pope Benedict XVI calls us to a renew our commitment to the mission of Christ.  Read his entire address here.

World Mission Day falls on Sunday, October 23rd.

 A New Commandment

"I give you a new commandment: love one another.  As I have loved you, so should you love one another.  This is how all will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another."

-John 13:34-35

Some commandments are easier to follow than others.  It may be easier to avoid stealing, for instance, than to actively love others, especially those that try our patience or injure us.  How can you more fully live out this commandment to love?  Where do you need help in living out this commandment, and where can you find it?
