Greetings!
Our Centennial Celebrations locally and around the world continue. It has truly been a blessed time for us to connect and in some cases re-connect with our sponsors, partners and collaborators. Locally, a grand niece of one of our founders, Fr. Thomas Price, contacted us and will be joining us for the Benefactors' Celebration in Los Altos!

We have some great events coming up in September, including a presentation by the group I accompanied to Tanzania and Kenya. One of the greatest joys of that trip for me was having my son, Michael, join us. He is an English major with a Global African Studies minor at Seattle University. Watching him connect with the people there, especially other college students in Nairobi and Mwanza was such a sign of hope for the future. He will be one of the main presenters next week, Monday, Sept. 12th at Our Lady of Grace in Castro Valley.
We are also pleased to announce that renowned ORBIS author, Megan McKenna will be with us on September 15th for a special evening. Seating will be limited, so we'd appreciate a heads up if you'll be joining us.
Finally, Movie Nights are back, but will not be held on the first Monday of the month since that didn't seem to work out well for folks. We'll be starting off on Sept. 22nd with an amazing film, Of God's and Men.
We look forward to being in touch.
Peace,
Matt and the Maryknoll Team |

Earlier this summer, six individuals set off on a safari to immerse themselves in East African life and culture. The group spent three weeks in the region, splitting time between Kenya and Tanzania. During the safari, the group visited a school for Masaai girls, toured the slums of Kibera, spent time with the Immaculate Heart Sisters of Africa, and celebrated masses with different communities each Sunday. Come hear the stories and see the pictures.

Movie Night: Of Gods and Men
Thursday, Sept. 22nd at 7pm
Maryknoll Regional Center
Common Room
Eight French Christian Trappist monks live in harmony with local Muslim villagers perched in the mountains of North Africa in the 1990s. When a crew of foreign workers is massacred by an Islamic fundamentalist group, fear sweeps through the region. The corrupt government offers them protection, but the monks refuse. Despite the growing menace in their midst, they are forced to decide whether to stay or leave... come what may. This film is based on the life of the Cistercian monks of Tibhirine in Algeria. |
Education Resources
Catechists, Teachers, RCIA Leaders, DREs, we're here to help YOU!
One of the most time consuming aspects of educating is lesson plan preparation and gathering resources. We've done that for you! We have lesson plans developed by an educator on topics such as the current drought situation in Somalia, World Malaria Day, Mission Songs and more. Lesson plans are developed for grade school, middle school and high school/adult grade levels. Best of all, they're free!

Mission Education Training Session

Friday October 21, 2011 at 6 PM
-to- Sunday October 23, 2011 at 12 PM
With baptism, we are all called to participate in the mission of Jesus. But how many Catholics are aware of this and formed for mission, whether at home or around the world?
One of the first things Jesus did with his disciples was to send them out in pairs to do what he did. To do mission. Jesus passed this mission on to his disciples and for almost two thousand years the mission has passed down from generation to generation. We are excited to offer a Mission Education Training Session for teachers, principals, DREs, lay ecclesial ministers, catechists, deacons and priests. Incorporate a stronger sense of mission into your ministerial identity and spirituality. Develop skills and resources to integrate into your ministry and programs. Help your students and parishioners come alive in their faith as you animate and support them in their calling to take part in the mission of Jesus.
Four two-hour sessions over the course of the weekend at our Maryknoll Regional Center in San Lorenzo. Overnight accommodations available.
- Session 1: Scriptural and Historical Foundations of Mission
- Session 2: Models and Methods of Mission Today, Maryknoll History and Charism
- Session 3: The Spirituality of Mission Education
- Session 4: Developing and Implementing Mission Education Components
Each participant will receive a Mission Resource Kit, including the book, What is the Mission of the Church?, sample posters and study guides, DVDs and more.
A donation of $100 is suggested to cover the costs of accommodation and materials, but we understand the financial constraints on those working for the Church and we are happy to host you as our gift.

Taize Prayer Gathering
Second
Wednesday of the Month
at 7 pm
Taize is a meditative common prayer using song, chants, scripture, reflection and periods of contemplative silence, a prayer that does not end, but continues in the silence of the heart. Within this sacred space one is drawn into a deeper awareness of God's presence; it is a prayerful opportunity for self-reflection.
Contemplative prayer is seen as a critical path in mission. It is through prayer that we are connected with God and it is in the silence of our hearts that God communicates and shares with us God's mission of love for the world.
Taize will be held the second Wednesday of every month in the Chapel at the Maryknoll Center at 16642 Ashland Avenue, San Lorenzo. The hour long service will start at 7:00 p.m. with Ruth Picha. Ruth is a Spiritual Director, who trained at Mercy Center in Burlingame. |

Reflection
Shine On, Farmer Boy
Shine on, farmer boy,
symbol to me of the thousand million like you who drew the Son of God from heaven to smooth and bless your weary anxieties and your puzzled brows.
Come to me often in your barefoot squalor and look at me from out of those hopeless and bewildered eyes.
Do not let me forget that vision, but stay by me and preside over my dreams.
Teach me that souls are people. And remind me everlastingly that they are magnificent people like you.
Bishop James E. Walsh, MM, for the people of China, from A Maryknoll Book of Prayer

More about Bishop James E. Walsh:
Bishop Walsh was one of the original group of four Maryknoll priests who had been assigned to China in 1918. He died at the age of 90 and had been the second superior general of Maryknoll, elected to a 10-year term in 1936. He spent 12 years in Chinese Communist prisons. In 1958, at the age of 67, he had been sentenced to 20 years in prison for counterrevolutionary activities. In 1970, he was released because of ill health and returned to this country where he was greeted by the President of the United States. |
