News from Maryknoll Northwest

Greetings!

This past weekend, I accompanied Fr. Tom McCormick to St. Charles Parish in Burlingon, WA, which has a substantial population of Hispanic parishioners.  After the Saturday evening Spanish Mass, I was discussing my need to improve my (extremely) limited Spanish-speaking abilities with Fr. Tom, who has served as a missioner in Mexico and Columbia.  He shared something that a Peace Corps language instructor told him when he started learning the language, "You have a thousand mistakes in your pocket, and if you don't use them you won't learn anything."

As we near the end of summer and gear up for the fall, I can think of no better motivational slogan for a missionary people.  On the one hand, we recognize that we need to move past our fear of making mistakes in order to live out the call to mission. On the other hand, we must accept that mistakes will be made, and that we cannot truly serve the Lord without acknowledging and learning from them.

With that in mind, I hope that we all can find the courage to answer the call to mission in our daily lives.  Be it stepping outside ourselves to address the Crisis in East Africa, learning more about the projects serving migrant workers in the Skagit Valley, attending a Maryknoll Affiliate meeting, or simply spending some time each week volunteering - often, the biggest hurdle is our own fear of embarassment, of making mistakes.  But, as that Peace Corps instructor pointed out, those mistakes are actually gifts to those of us hoping to learn and grow.

Please enjoy the news below with an open mind and heart.  As always, if you have news that you think might interest us here at Maryknoll, send us a message!  Have a happy end of summer.

Peace,

Maryknoll recently led a mission immersion trip out of the San Francisco Bay Area to Kenya and Tanzania.  Among other things, it further highlighted for us the devastation of the continued famine in the Horn of Africa.  Click the links below for background information and ways that you can help.

St. Charles also runs a tri-parish food bank and mission for migrant workers.  This mission is associated with the Youth Migrant Project run through St. James Cathedral.

 Who Is Mission?

"What is most important is that the church live in a way that is open to and responsible for the world around it, whether that 'world' in the United States is shared with those who are homeless in its neighborhood, or the wider world that is suffering from a lack of respect for the environment, or a 'world' of another parish in Guatemala or the Philippines that is struggling to educate its children or to put in a new water system in the village.  Today, it is probably more important to think not where is mission, but who is mission."

-Steven Bevans

Who do you see as mission in your life?  If Jesus was in your community right now, to whom would he be ministering?
