Greetings!

Africa Immersion 2011 AIDS

I hope you're having a great summer!

I recently returned from an immersion trip to Kenya and Tanzania with a parish group.  The picture is from our visit to a HIV/AIDS project started by Maryknoll in Nairobi.

The people of East Africa face many challenges.  Nonetheless, the group repeatedly remarked how impressed they were with the hospitality, joy and hope they received as they traveled from the slums of Kibera to the plains of the Serengeti to the villages on the shores of Lake Victoria.   Especially during this 100th anniversary of the founding of the Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers it was amazing to not only see the legacy of what mission has brought to Kenya and Tanzania, but also what the people and Church of Africa have brought to the rest of the world.

We have some great events coming up, including a retreat on Aug. 26-28 sponsored by the Maryknoll Affiliates that ponders that age old question, are you a Mary or a Martha?  Developing a Global Spirituality, Balancing Contemplation and Action.

We are also pleased to announce that renown ORBIS author, Megan McKenna will be with us on September 15th for a special evening.

We continue to beef up our mission education resources and invite you to explore our expanded website  and blogs  including new resources on the famine in East Africa and the birth of the African nation of South Sudan.

We look forward to being in touch.

Peace,
 Matt and the Maryknoll Team
AffiliateRetreat Retreat:  Developing a Global Mission Spirituality:   Balancing Contemplation and Action

Friday, August 26th to Sunday August 28th

Martha MaryAre you a Martha or a Mary?   Jesus lived the balance between contemplation and action.  As his disciples trying to carrying on his mission, we often times find ourselves struggling to find the right mix of silence and activity, of prayer and ministry and of contemplation and action.

Join us for this retreat to celebrate both the gifts of contemplation and action and reflect on how in our own life we strive to find the right balance.

This retreat is sponsored by the Eastbay Maryknoll Affiliates, a community of men and women grounded in global spirituality to do their part to carry on the mission of Jesus locally and abroad.   Join them for the weekend to learn more about how to develop a spirituality rooted in the mission of Jesus that balances contemplation and action in service for the Reign of God.

The retreat includes the screening of the award winning film, "Of Gods and Men" and opportunities for silence, reflection, sharing and community building.  It begins with a simple dinner on Friday night and concludes with the opportunity to celebrate the Eucharist with the community at St. John the Baptist Parish on Sunday morning.

For more information contact Kris East at 510-276-5021.

Overnight accommodations are available.   Learn more about our retreat facilities here.

Taize Prayer Gathering

Second
Wednesday of the Month
at 7 pm

Taize is a meditative common prayer using song, chants, scripture, reflection and periods of contemplative silence, a prayer that does not end, but continues in the silence of the heart. Within this sacred space one is drawn into a deeper awareness of God's presence; it is a prayerful opportunity for self-reflection.

Contemplative prayer is seen as a critical path in mission.   It is through prayer that we are connected with God and it is in the silence of our hearts that God communicates and shares with us God's mission of love for the world.

Taize will be held the second Wednesday of every month in the Chapel at the Maryknoll Center at 16642 Ashland Avenue, San Lorenzo. The hour long service will start at 7:00 p.m. with Ruth Picha.  Ruth is a Spiritual Director, who trained at Mercy Center in Burlingame.

Reflection

You Can Make a Difference

I particularly remember when a child was brought in our clinic at Nimule in Sudan. The child was just skin, bones, and slumped over. I looked at him and thought to myself that if they bring one sicker child to the clinic who looks like this, I do not think I can go on again. It is just too much. So, we did what we could for that child as well as the other children. What we were doing was handing out flour and oil, and the parents would take their children home and feed them.

Six weeks later, that same child came back. He was jumping around and smiling. There are moments when you feel like you cannot do one more thing and you just try for the sake. Then when you see someone like that child get better in a few weeks, you know that you made a difference with that child. And if you make a difference with that one, you can make a difference with another one.

True story, Dr. Susan Nagele, MLM, Nimule,(former) Sudan.
