Greetings!

Greetings!

One of the best images for God that I have come across recently is in the book Prophetic Dialogue by Stephen Bevans and Roger Schroeder.  The book describes God as a dance, a conga line that moves through us, causes to act, and spreads to others.  And, like a dance, the Lord joins us in communion and joy.  Sharing in that joy with others - crossing borders to spend time and serve with those that we may not typically encounter - is central to mission.

I have been reflecting upon this over the past month as we have been blessed here at the Maryknoll Mission House to encounter people from many different walks of life.  As always, the Maryknoll Mission House is a place to visit, join together, and pursue God's mission.  From the volunteers from St. Louise Parish in Bellevue that did work at the house, to the gathering of local priest friends of Maryknoll in honor of our Foundation Day, to the Buddhist monk that stopped by this week just to meet and chat, we have truly felt the joy of God in communion with others.  We were also visited many times by a Maryknoll Associate Priest who was accompanying a young woman from Cambodia, here to receive medical treatment for a rare disease.  Thankfully, the procedure was successful and she should be able to return home soon.

In addition, we have seen a great outpouring of generosity from parishioners and parish staff and clergy as our Maryknoll priests have begun visiting local parishes to celebrate Mass.  We will continue to visit local parishes throughout the Summer, and invite you to attend.  As Pope Benedict XVI outlines in his World Mission Sunday Message, the church itself is missionary.

Thanks again for your support and for joining with us as we strive to live out God's mission on Earth.

Peace,

St. Louise Volunteers

On June 4th, a group of teenagers and adult chaperones from St. Louise Parish in Bellevue gave up their Saturday to paint the fence and do yard work at the Maryknoll Mission House.  As we explained to the students when they were here, we are extremely grateful for the work that they have done for us.  The Mission House serves to promote and support our missions overseas, as well as to help animate the local Church to mission.  By helping us, these young people contributed to that work.  Moreover, the enthusiasm with which they committed themselves to this work was particularly inspiring.  While they were working, they caught the attention of a neighbor, who stopped by to inquire about the house and what we do.  He told me that he had seen the house many times, but not until then had he ever decided to ask about us!

We thank the volunteers and wish them well as they depart on their own mission experience this summer through their parish.

PriestGatheringFoundation Day Gathering

Some 16 priests from the Archdiocese of Seattle gathered at the Maryknoll Mission House on June 29 to help celebrate Maryknoll's 100th Birthday.  It was on June 29, 1911 that Saint Pope Pius X officially approved the establishment of Maryknoll, the Catholic Foreign Mission Society of America, by the U.S. Bishops.

Founders Day Gathering 2

This year the Church in the U.S. celebrates Maryknoll's Centennial.  The Centennial is being marked in many places, including, of course, at the Maryknoll Headquarters in Ossining NY.  Special celebrations will be taking place in several Archdioceses here in the States, including Seattle.  This event is being marked in various countries where Maryknoll has worked around the world, in Asia, Africa and Latin America.

In Seattle, there will be a special Centennial Mass celebrated at St. James Cathedral at the Noon Mass on Sunday, September 25.  This will be followed by a reception in the Parish Hall of St. James.  Archbishop J. Peter Sartain will preside at this Eucharistic Celebration as Principal Celebrant.

MissionSundayWorld Mission Sunday Message

World Mission Sunday falls on October 23 this year. The World Mission Sunday Mission Message of Pope Benedict XVI for 2011 has been published and is available at this link.

In his Mission Message our Holy Father states again how Mission is at the heart of the Church.  Proclaiming the Gospel is inclusive in that it is intended for all peoples. Quoting from the Vatican II Decree on the Church's Missionary Activity (Ad Gentes) he writes: "The Church is 'by her very nature missionary since, according to the plan of the Father, she has her origin in the mission of the Son and the Holy Spirit.'"

"The universal mission," he continues, "involves all, all things and always. The Gospel is not an exclusive possession of whoever has received it but a gift to share, good news to communicate."

 Being Church

 PropheticDialogue

"We are most church not when we are building up the church, but when we are outside of it: being good parents, being loving spouses, being diligent and honest in our workplace, treating our patients with care if we are health workers, going the extra mile with our students if we are teachers, living lives responsible to the environment, being responsible citizens, sharing our resources with the needy, standing up for social justice, consciously using inclusive language, treating immigrants fairly, trying to understand people of other faiths, etc., etc."

-From Prophetic Dialogue

Being church (being mission!) is difficult.  Where do you succeed most in being church in your daily life?  Where could you be more successful at living mission, and what do you need from others and from yourself in order to do so?
