Greetings!
Greetings!
With Pentecost approaching, I was re-reading "Teaching the Spirit of Mission Ad Gentes," published by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops in 2005. In one section, it comments on the ways in which modern technology has "drawn the whole world together," asking whether there is, consequently, less of a need for us to "go out to all the nations." "Not at all," it concludes. "Mission...is still very much a person-to-person ministry."
During Pentecost, the Apostles are suddenly enabled to proclaim the Good News in different languages (Acts 2:3-4). I cannot help but think, when I read that passage, of the many Maryknollers that learn the languages, customs, skills, and gifts of the people with whom they serve, in order to better answer Christ's call. It is helpful to keep this in mind when we try to balance all of the ways that we connect with people and causes through technology and financial support with the need - indeed, the call - to serve with people in a physical, personal sense.
Our graduates, too, will continue to learn the need to speak the many languages of the people with whom they will work and serve - and that there is more to learn every day about ourselves and our neighbors. It is highly fitting that Pentecost so closely coincides with the graduation of our students. We send them out formed in faith, knowledge, and ability, to grow into themselves as followers of Christ and members of the global community. Personally, I know that, for all of the important administrative work that I do for Maryknoll - including processing the generous donations which support the vital work of our missioners overseas - I also cherish the ability to work with people in the community, spreading the gift of Christ's love and animating people to mission, not to mention being renewed in my own call.
The contents of this months mailing, then, are in keeping with this spirit of Pentecost. Below, you will read about some of the recent outreach that we have done with local schools and parishes, acknowledgement of some of the volunteers that have recently dedicated their time and energy to the Maryknoll Mission House, and upcoming dates in which Maryknoll priests will celebrate Mass and share their mission experiences at local parishes this summer.
Thank you for your committment to mission and for your support of Maryknoll. Please contact me if you would like myself or Father Tom Marti, MM, to speak to your group about mission, global inequality, or solidarity with the poor.
Peace,
Kevin Foy

Catholic School Outreach
Continuing our support of and collaboration with local Catholic schools, we were fortunate to work with two groups of students during the month of May. On May 25th, I gave a presentation to seventh graders at Assumption-St. Bridget School on Mission and Maryknoll as part of their religion class. It was great to engage with the students, who were extremely thoughtful in answering questions and in considering the material with which they were asked to grapple. Thank you to Linda Reid, 7th Grade Religion Teacher, for inviting us and granting us time to work with her students.
On May 31st, the graduating class of St. Paul School visited the Maryknoll Mission House. My wife has taught these students in the middle school for three years, and I have known these students for most of that time. It was great to spend some time with them as they transition into high school, and help them tie that transition into the call we all must answer to be models of Christ's love to all whom we encounter. Thank you to eighth grade teacher Gregory Cox and St. Paul principal Betsy Kromer for chaperoning, and to the class of 2011 for their respectful use of the space.
If you would like us to visit a class or youth group with a lesson, activity, or presentation, please contact Kevin Foy at kfoy@maryknoll.org. Also, do not forget our 2011 Youth on Mission Contest. Deadline July 1st. |

Mission Rosary
On May 21st, I prayed the Mission Rosary with parishioners at St. Anthony Parish in Renton. Each decade of the Mission Rosary is prayed for a different region of the Earth, tying mission and prayer together, and memorializing Christ's mission. Read about my experience praying the Mission Rosary with St. Anthony Parish here.
| | Each color of the Mission Rosary represents a different region of the Earth. |
Thanks to Fr. Gary Zender and my fellow parishioners at St. Anthony for allowing me share in this experience with you. If you would like arrange a Mission Rosary with your parish or group, please email me at kfoy@maryknoll.org. |

Thank You Volunteers!
We would like to thank those that have recently volunteered their time and energy to the Maryknoll Mission House. They include Al Drinkwine, who was kind enough to power-wash our walkways and porch steps, John O'Dore and Pat Higgins, who have been preparing for our fence for painting, and the youth group from St. Louise Parish in Bellevue, who will soon be painting our fence and helping maintain our gardens.
We appreciate your support and missionary spirit, and thank you for helping us in our efforts. |

Reflection
Pentecost
"As soon as the apostles received the Holy Spirit, they immediately began to proclaim Christ to the crowd (Acts 2:4). Everyone who is baptized in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit has already within them the seed of the apostles' fiery enthusiasm for proclamation. The Holy Spirit-the Spirit of mission-guides and strengthens our witness to Christ; the same Spirit was the driving force in the life and the mission of Christ himself."
-From Teaching the Spirit of Mission Ad Gentes
Have you felt inspired by the Holy Spirit to witness and proclaim your faith lately, or have you felt the Spirit lacking in your life and ministry? One way to reclaim this "fiery enthusiasm" is to let the Spirit guide you to those most in need. Ask yourself, "Where is the Spirit leading me?"
