News from Maryknoll Northwest

Greetings!

Greetings!

With the Easter Season upon us and the sun beginning to shine again, it's hard not to feel joyous!  Almost as if on cue to kick off this time of great hope, the first call that I received on the  morning after Easter Sunday was from a soon-to-retire gentleman wishing to become a Maryknoll Lay Missioner.  Keeping that in mind, I am pleased to share news of other upcoming and ongoing events related to Maryknoll and mission, including the following:

Of course,  news broke early this month of the killing death of Osama Bin Laden.  Many people (myself included) have been dealing with conflicting emotions surrounding this event, weighing the pain and anger caused by this man's actions with the teachings of Christ - chief among them, at least in this moment, being forgiveness.  Whatever spiritual confusion this event may cause, though, it is abundantly clear that this violent confrontation - as well as the events of September 11th that sparked it - and the ongoing wars and other armed conflicts that continue across the globe speak to the ever-present need for our own witness to the peace, love, and forgiveness of Christ.

On May 1st, my youngest niece was baptized into the Catholic Church, and my wife and I are priveleged and blessed to serve as her godparents.  I cannot help but draw a connection between this joyous occasion and the tragedy of violence that would dominate our national conversation only a day later.  In baptism, we are all called to live out Christ's vision for humanity, acting as His body now on Earth.  Just as my niece begins her long journey of following in the light of Christ, let us in this Easter season answer our own baptismal call with renewed passion and determination.

Thank you, as always, for your support of Maryknoll's efforts to share the love, peace, and promise of Christ with those most in need, and for your own witness to the Gospel.

Peace,

 Easter Peace

"For St. Paul 'the bond of peace' Christ gives his disciples defines the church. It unites its members across class, gender and ethnic barriers: slave-free, male-female, Jew-Greek. The bond of peace is more essential to the church's identity, in Paul's estimation, than any charisms or offices his disciples may exercise, and in the Christian community genuine unity ought to weigh even more heavily than any claims of religious lineage or preening orthodoxy."

-From America Magazine, April 25th, 2011

How can you work to strengthen the bonds of peace in your own life and ministry?  Where are you challenged to unite "across class, gender, and ethnic barriers"?  How might that unity strengthen and enliven your spiritual life?
