Greetings!
Greetings from Maryknoll!
In April we will be joining the walk against Genocide. A couple years ago I had the opportunity to visit Cambodia, the site of one the most horrific genocides of recent times. As I visited the prison where so many had been tortured and saw the stacks of bones and skulls of the victims, I was overwhelmed by the evil that had occurred there. But God's love can penetrate even the darkest of places.
It was also in Cambodia that I saw the face of God's love, particularly in the enthusiasm and hope of the young people rebuilding their country. It also there that I had the honor of meeting Maryknoll Sr. Luise Aherns. After her term as President of the Maryknoll Sisters, she went on mission to Cambodia to put her Ph.D. to hard work in rebuilding the university system that had been demolished by the Khmer Rouge.
We are excited to have Sr. Luise visiting the Bay Area in May and I hope that you'll be able meet her at the two mission forums she will be giving. Details below.
PLEASE NOTE: Because of the Maryknoll Parish Mission at St. John the Baptist, the regularly scheduled Movie Night on April 4th is cancelled. Please join us at the Parish Mission.
As we continue on our Lenten Journey to the celebration of Easter, we invite you join us at the various activities that are coming up here the in Bay Area, including our Eve of Holy Week Retreat.
We hope to see you soon!
Peace,
Matt

Eve of Holy Week Retreat: Living the Paschal Mystery
Friday, April 15 to
Sunday, April 17
Join us for a special retreat weekend to center ourselves in preparation for Holy Week, the Triduum and the great Easter season. Through silence, communal prayer, reflection on Scripture and faith sharing, we will meditate on Jesus' invitation to enter with him into the Paschal Mystery so that we can become an Easter People to carry on his mission.

Lenten Parish Mission: From Blindness into the Light, Called to be Light to the World

Saturday, April 2nd to
Wednesday, April 6
St. John the Baptist, San Lorenzo
Join us for a Lenten Parish Mission at St. John the Bapist in San Lorenzo. Like the blind man in John's Gospel, many of us live our lives with blinders on, not fully aware of the gift of God's love all around us. Jesus invites us to be healed of our blindness and to enter into the light of God's love. Bathed in that light, Jesus then send us out to continue his mission to be the Light of the World!
Our Maryknoll team will preach at all the weekend masses.
Saturday: Vigil 4:30 pm (English) 6:30pm (Hispanic)
Sunday: 7:30, 9:30, 11:30 am, 2:00 pm (Hispanic)
There will be an open House at the Maryknoll Regional Center after all the masses.
Mission Sessions on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday:
- Morning Sessons 9:15 am (following daily mass)
- Evening Sessions 7:00 pm
- Sessions in both English and Spanish
- Wednesday 7pm Session includes a Reconciliation Service with the opportunity for private confession

Mission Forum: Sr. Luise Aherns on Cambodia

Monday, May 9th at 7 pm
St. John Vianney, Walnut Creek
Tuesday, May 10th at 7 pm
Maryknoll Regional Center
Join us for a Mission Forum with Sr. Luise Aherns to hear about her amazing work in Cambodia.
In 1991, after finishing her term as President of the Maryknoll Sisters, Sr. Luise Aherns was assigned to Cambodia to help re-establish the Royal University of Phnom Penh, which was hit particularly hard during the reign of terror of the Khmer Rouge. Only two educators and thirty-six students were still alive and able to return to help re-establish the university.
Sister Luise continues in the English Language program and the university library and collaborates in planning in the national higher education system. In 1985, she received the Fordham University Distinguished Alumni Award. |

Taize Prayer Gathering
Second
Wednesday of the Month
at 7 pm
Taize is a meditative common prayer using song, chants, scripture, reflection and periods of contemplative silence, a prayer that does not end, but continues in the silence of the heart. Within this sacred space one is drawn into a deeper awareness of God's presence; it is a prayerful opportunity for self-reflection.
Contemplative prayer is seen as a critical path in mission. It is through prayer that we are connected with God and it is in the silence of our hearts that God communicates and shares with us God's mission of love for the world.
Taize will be held the second Wednesday of every month in the Chapel at the Maryknoll Center at 16642 Ashland Avenue, San Lorenzo. The hour long service will start at 7:00 p.m. with Ruth Picha. Ruth is a Spiritual Director, who trained at Mercy Center in Burlingame. |

Reflection
THERE IS MISSION*
Wherever hearts overflow with the love of God and joy-filled voices sing God's praise:
ALL: There is Mission
Wherever hearts break and tears flow and people bend beneath heavy burdens:
ALL: There is Mission
Wherever hearts open to invite in strangers and enemies no less than neighbors:
ALL: There is Mission
Wherever hearts cry out for justice and peace and dream of a far better world
ALL: There is Mission
Wherever borders dissolve and walls collapse until all become sisters and brothers:
ALL: There is Mission
Wherever the Reign of God calls people to leave what is and sacrifice all for what is yet to be:
ALL: There is Mission
Where our hearts are called in this moment to name those places in need of justice and peace:
NAME A PLACE ALOUD AND AFTER ALL PLACES HAVE BEEN NAMED ALL RESPOND TOGETHER:
ALL: There is Mission
LEADER: Then let us go forth as living signs of that mission, agents of that Mission, witnesses of that Mission until, consumed by that Mission, we set the world alight with God's love. Amen.
