News from Maryknoll Northwest

Greetings!

Greetings!

As Catholic Schools Week draws to a close, the future is looking brighter and brighter for mission education!  I have a special place in my heart for teachers - my father was a teacher and principal, my mother is a school counselor and former teacher, and both my sister and my wife are teachers in local Catholic schools - and I am blessed to be able to offer them my services and the services of Maryknoll.

All teachers, whether in a Catholic, private, or public setting, are vital to the moral formation of young people.  Still, Catholic school teachers are in a unique position to educate about Christ's call to mission in all of us.  With that in mind, Maryknoll is working with educators to create and share tools to help students from all backgrounds learn about the world at large and their role in it.  Here is some of what we've been working on:

  • We have initiated a Mission Education Best Practices Blog as a place to share mission education ideas and resources.
  • We are in the process of developing more online mission education resources for teachers and catechists.  Currently, we have begun our Accommodation and Enrichment page for teachers using the Maryknoll Magazine in the classroom.
  • We are providing the Maryknoll Magazine, along with posters and study guides to teachers and catechists to use in the classroom, free of charge.   About 150,000 students across the country are participating in this Classroom Program

Please, encourage the teachers that you know to take advantage of these resources, and to email me with suggestions.

In fact, email me with any questions, comments or suggestions regarding Maryknoll's presence in the Northwest.  You are our community, and we always look forward to hearing from you.

Peace,

 Mission Forum

Rubble

Many of you have inquired as to whether we will begin holding Mission Forums again.  For those of you unfamiliar with Mission Forum, it is when we invite speakers with mission experience to come and share that experience with all of us.

We here at the Maryknoll Mission House in Seattle are committed to starting this up again, and will let inform all of you when we are planning to hold our first event.

Thank you for your enthusiasm!

What is the Mission of the Church?

The church was born out of  the loving and redeeming flow of God's universal mission.  Walking through the Acts of the Apostles provides an excellent narrative behind the rediscovery of the Second Vatican Council [understanding that] "the pilgrim Church is missionary by her very nature."  To repeat, the church doesn't have a mission, but the mission has a church.

What are the differences and similarities between how the early Christian community approached mission and how we approach it today?
