Greetings!
Greetings! A few years back the U.S. bishops issued a statement on the important role that all catechists, teachers, lay ministers, deacons and priests play in educating and forming Catholics about mission.
Over a 100 years ago, our founders realized the importance of mission education and started the Maryknoll movement by first publishing the Field Afar, the predecessor of the Maryknoll Magazine, many years before the first missionaries would be sent to China.
Being a resource for Mission Education continues to the foundation of our ministry. This month, I'd like to highlight several opportunities and resources for mission education: - We will hold a Mission Education Training Program over the weekend of Feb. 25-27 at our Regional Center.
- We initiated a Mission Education Best Practices Blog as a place to share mission education ideas and resources.
- We are providing the Maryknoll Magazine, along with posters and study guides to teachers and catechists to use in the classroom, free of charge. About 150,000 students across the country are participating in this Classroom Program.
- We are in the process of developing more online mission resources for teachers and catechists that will be available soon.
If you know a teacher, catechist or other lay or ordained minister that might be interested in or would benefit from our mission education resources, please .
Peace, Matt Deacon Matt Dulka Regional Director

Retreat: Forgiveness, the Path to God
Friday, Feb. 11 to
Sunday, Feb. 13
This retreat weekend will provide time and space to examine the importance of forgiveness and to explore where in our lives we need to forgive and be forgiven. Through silence, community prayer and faith sharing we will journey from within to seek the healing love of God so that we can then move outward to be instruments of forgiveness and peace in our relationships with others and to the world.

Mission Education Training Program
Friday, Feb. 25 to
Sunday, Feb 27
With baptism, we are all called to participate in the mission of Jesus. But how many Catholics are aware of this and formed for mission, whether at home or around the world?
One of the first things Jesus did with his disciples was to send them out in pairs to do what he did. To do mission. Jesus passed this mission on to his disciples and for almost two thousand years the mission has passed down from generation to generation.
We are excited to offer a Mission Education Training Session for teachers, principals, DREs, lay ecclesial ministers, catechists, deacons and priests. Incorporate a stronger sense of mission into your ministerial identity and spirituality. Develop skills and resources to integrate into your ministry and programs. Help your students and parishioners come alive in their faith as you animate and support them in their calling to take part in the mission of Jesus.
Four two-hour sessions over the course of the weekend at our Maryknoll Regional Center in San Lorenzo. Overnight accommodations available.
Session 1: Scriptural and Historical Foundations of Mission
Session 2: Models and Methods of Mission Today, Maryknoll History and Charism
Session 3: Basics of Mission Education
Session 4: Developing and Implementing Mission Education Components
Each participant will receive a Mission Resource Kit, including the book, "What is the Mission of the Church?," sample posters and study guides, DVDs and more.

This movie is offered in conjunction with the St. John the Baptist Parish Faith Formation Program.
NOTE: The movie will be shown at the Maryknoll Center, not the Meeting Room by the Gym.

Taize Prayer Gathering
Second Wednesday of the Month
Next Gathering:
Wednesday, Feb. 9th
7 p.m.
Taize is a meditative common prayer using song, chants, scripture, reflection and periods of contemplative silence, a prayer that does not end, but continues in the silence of the heart. Within this sacred space one is drawn into a deeper awareness of God's presence; it is a prayerful opportunity for self-reflection.
Contemplative prayer is seen as a critical path in mission. It is through prayer that we are connected with God and it is in the silence of our hearts that God communicates and shares with us God's mission of love for the world.
Taize will be held the second Wednesday of every month in the Chapel at the Maryknoll Center at 16642 Ashland Avenue, San Lorenzo. The hour long service will start at 7:00 p.m. with Ruth Picha. Ruth is a Spiritual Director, who trained at Mercy Center in Burlingame. |

Reflection
The church was born out of the loving and redeeming flow of God's universal mission. Walking through the Acts of the Apostles provides an excellent narrative behind the rediscovery of the Second Vatican Council [understanding that] "the pilgrim Church is missionary by her very nature." To repeat, the church doesn't have a mission, but the mission has a church.
From: What is the Mission of the Church? , ORBIS 2008 Roger P. Schroeder
What are the differences and similarities between how the early Christian community approached mission and how we approach it today?
