Greetings!

Greetings!

My name is Kevin Foy, and I am the new Mission Promotion Coordinator for the Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers in Seattle.

Bishop James E. Walsh, MM, once said that, "To be a Missioner is to go where you are needed but not wanted; and to stay until you are wanted but not needed."  To me, this speaks also to the role that we at the Maryknoll Mission House here in Seattle hope to play in the community.  We hope to fill a need that we all hold in our hearts - a need to build community and fellowship, and to examine, discuss, and live out the ways in which we are all called to be models of Christ's love in the world.

Seattle House SignSome of you receiving this newsletter are longtime followers and participants of Maryknoll, while others may be just recently learning about us and the work that we are doing in your area.  I invite all of you to share your wisdom, enthusiasm, and creativity with me, as well as with Fr. Tom Marti, MM.  Father Tom (read more below) is the director of our Seattle house, as well as the Associate Director of our Western Region.  Together, we are hoping to undertake some of the following initiatives with all of you in the community:

  • Connect people with opportunities to learn about and live Mission
  • Host speakers, discussions, and other community events
  • Work with educators to create and utilize materials for the classroom
  • Build partnerships with parishes and other religious organizations
  • Continue to work with the Missions Office in the Seattle Archdiocese to sponsor events and promote mission

As I enter this new role and new community, I hope that I can learn as much as I can from all of you, and to keep my heart and mind open to every opportunity and person that I encounter.  Below, you can read more about the Mission of Maryknoll, and about Fr. Tom and myself.

I invite you to to anyone that you think might be interested in Maryknoll or events that we are hosting in the Seattle area.

Peace,

Kevin Foy

 What We Do

We work, in response to Jesus' Gospel mandate, in spreading the love of God among our brothers and sisters in need throughout Asia, Africa and Latin America. In partnership with the local Church, we help create clinics and hospitals ... agricultural and vocational training programs ... leadership and community development programs ... AIDS ministry and education ... feeding, health hygiene and nutrition programs ... and we bring hope and healing to a world of broken spirits.

In Asia Maryknoll Missioners mirror Christ's love amid a wide variety of cultures, languages and world religions. Our works include care of the mentally and physically challenged, counseling workers, promoting community organizations, AIDS ministries, and interreligious dialogue.

In Africa Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers share in the suffering of hundreds of thousands uprooted by war and famine, those struggling with AIDS and orphaned by AIDS, and the many who labor to compete in a global economy.

In Latin America Maryknoll has helped build the infrastructures of parishes, schools, clinics and social programs, and increasingly assists in the formation of a committed and active laity.

In the United States we work to increase awareness and understanding of mission throughout the country, with Mission Centers in Chicago, San Lorenzo, CA, and Houston, as well as at our New York headquarters, plus Mission Offices in Jacksonville, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Boston, Buffalo, Dallas, New Orleans, San Antonio, Los Angeles, Seattle, Honolulu, and Denver.

Kevin Foy

Kevin was born in Seattle and earned his Bachelor's degree from Seattle University.  After college, he joined the Alliance for Catholic Education, earning his Master's from Notre Dame while teaching in inner-city Birmingham, AL, and then on the Texas-Mexico border.  He has also taught in Seattle's Beacon Hill neighborhood.

Kevin's first experience with Maryknoll occurred when he was in the eighth grade.  He had read about the assassinations of Maryknoll missioners in Latin America, and decided to protest the School of the Americas at Fort Benning, GA, that same year.  When he returned to Seattle, he gave presentations to his classmates about his experience, and has been committed to social justice, service and education ever since.

Kevin and his wife attend St. Anthony Catholic Parish in Renton, WA.

 What They Taught Us

"A funny thing happened on the way to the missions.   Armed with my seminary notes and skills and oozing righteousness, I went to the missions prepared to give but not to receive, to teach but not to learn.  I soon discovered, to my great chagrin, that mission was  two-way street....

Mission is to go to a no-place, to serve God's no-bodies, and in the eyes of the world, to accomplish no-thing.  Yet, in doing this we realize we are at the heart of what time, meaning and history are all about."

From:  What They Taught US, How Maryknoll Missioners were Evangelized by the Poor, ORBIS 2009
Forward by John J. Walsh, MM

How have I encountered God in unexpected places with people who I thought I was coming to serve, but who in fact served me by showing me the face of God?
