Greetings!

Greetings!

Yesterday on the feast of the Epiphany, Pope Benedict said that Christ is not found on the thrones of power or in the hallways of learning, he is found defenseless among the poor and humble.  What a great reflection for the new year as we set out with renewed enthusiasm to encounter God.

For the Maryknoll family this new year has great meaning as we celebrate the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Maryknoll Fathers & Brothers.  Later in the year the celebration will shift focus to the 100th anniversary of the Maryknoll Sisters.

So much can be gleaned from 100 years of mission, but perhaps Pope Benedict sums it up best with his Epiphany reflection:  we have encountered God in our walking with the poor and humble.

We hope that you will join us in our reflections, celebrations and prayers during this centennial year.   Stay tuned for more details.

We are blessed to have renowned author and speaker Fr. Diarmuid O'Murchu join us on Tuesday, January 18th at 7:30 pm for our Mission Forum.   In light of our Centennial celebrations, his timely topic will be the "The Missionary Shift in our Time."   He will reflect on the changes, challenges and opportunities for mission today.

New Year, new beginnings:   join us in welcoming Kevin Foy as our new Mission Promotion Coordinator in Seattle.   Read more about Kevin below.

Tanzania Matt with FamilyBack to Pope Benedict's Epiphany message:  mission immersion trips are a great way to encounter Christ in the poor and humble.  I'm putting together a small group for mission immersion trip to Kenya and Tanzania, June 22 to July 12, to visit our Maryknollers there and the people they accompany (and also visit the amazing beauty of God's creation at Ngorongoro crater and the Serengeti).  If you're interested in joining us, please contact me.

We hope to see you soon at one our gatherings.

Peace,

Diarmuid O'Murchu:  The Missionary Shift in Our Time

O'Marchu
Fr. Diarmuid O'Murchu
Tuesday, January 18th
7:30 pm

Join us for a special Mission Forum with renown author and speaker, Fr. Diarmuid O'Murchu.

He will share with us his reflections on the changes, challenges and opportunities of doing mission today.

The missionary endeavor today adopts as a primary focus the tripartide challenge of "Peace, Justice and the Integrity of Creation." It marks a distinctive shift from earlier understandings, with a significant shift to adult catechesis, growth and development. Diarmuid O'Murchu, drawing on his international experience as lecturer and workshop leader, will explore the implications of this new approach.

An award-winning, critically acclaimed documentary, narrated by Nicole Kidman, GOD GREW TIRED OF US explores the indomitable spirit of three "Lost Boys" from the Sudan who are forced to leave their homeland due to a tumultuous civil war. The documentary chronicles their triumph over seemingly insurmountable adversities and a relocation to America, where the Lost Boys build active and fulfilling new lives but remain deeply committed to helping friends and family they have left behind.
This movie is offered in conjunction with the St. John the Baptist Parish Faith Formation Program.

NOTE:  The movie will be shown at the Maryknoll Center, not the Meeting Room by the Gym.

Taize Prayer Gathering

Second Wednesday of the Month
Next Gathering:  Wednesday, Jan. 12
7 p.m.

Taize is a meditative common prayer using song, chants, scripture, reflection and periods of contemplative silence, a prayer that does not end, but continues in the silence of the heart. Within this sacred space one is drawn into a deeper awareness of God's presence; it is a prayerful opportunity for self-reflection.
Contemplative prayer is seen as a critical path in mission.   It is through prayer that we are connected with God and it is in the silence of our hearts that God communicates and shares with us God's mission of love for the world.

Taize will be held the second Wednesday of every month in the Chapel at the Maryknoll Center at 16642 Ashland Avenue, San Lorenzo. The hour long service will start at 7:00 p.m. with Ruth Picha.  Ruth is a Spiritual Director, who trained at Mercy Center in Burlingame.

Welcome our new Mission Promotion Coordinator Kevin Foy

  Kevin Foy

Kevin joins our team as a Mission Promotion Coordinator working out of our Seattle House with Fr. Tom Marti, MM.

Kevin was born in Seattle and earned his Bachelor's degree from Seattle University.  After college, he joined the Alliance for Catholic Education, earning his Master's from Notre Dame while teaching in inner-city Birmingham, AL, and then on the Texas-Mexico border.  He has also taught in Seattle's Beacon Hill neighborhood.

Kevin's first experience with Maryknoll occurred when he was in the eighth grade.  He had read about the assassinations of Maryknoll missioners in Latin America, and decided to protest the School of the Americas at Fort Benning, GA, that same year.  When he returned to Seattle, he gave presentations to his classmates about his experience, and has been committed to social justice, service and education ever since.

Kevin and his wife attend St. Anthony Catholic Parish in Renton, WA.

Kevin can help you find the resources you need for mission education and is available for workshops and presentations.  He can be reached at kfoy@maryknoll.org

 What They Taught Us

"A funny thing happened on the way to the missions.   Armed with my seminary notes and skills and oozing righteousness, I went to the missions prepared to give but not to receive, to teach but not to learn.  I soon discovered, to my great chagrin, that mission was  two-way street....

Mission is to go to a no-place, to serve God's no-bodies, and in the eyes of the world, to accomplish no-thing.  Yet, in doing this we realize we are at the heart of what time, meaning and history are all about."

From:  What They Taught US, How Maryknoll Missioners were Evangelized by the Poor, ORBIS 2009
Forward by John J. Walsh, MM

How have I encountered God in unexpected places with people who I thought I was coming to serve, but who in fact served me by showing me the face of God?
