Greetings!
Greetings!
This time of the year our liturgies focus our attention on the end times, the reality that everything here on earth comes to an end. While this may cause distress and despair from some, as Christians, we approach this with hope and joy, firm in our faith that God's love endures. And so with enthusiasm we're able to engage in the mission of bringing that Good News to so many who have given up hope.
Speaking of joy...with great Aloha spirit, we kicked off our Centennial Celebrations with a Benefactors' Day event at the Maryknoll High School in Honolulu. Bishop Larry Silva celebrated the Mass and at the Reception afterwards we recounted Maryknoll's 80 year history in the islands. Click here to see the presentation.
Speaking of hope...a good number of Maryknollers joined missioners from around the world at the Mission Congress in Albuquerque. An important theme was that the vitality and future of the Church depend on shifting our focus from inward to outward, from maintenance to mission. Click here to see highlights. Upcoming...Our annual Christmas Around the World Celebration will be on Dec. 14th. Mark your calendars. Also coming up...our monthly Taize Prayer Gathering and our Advent Retreat. Details below. Visit us at the Northern California Faith Formation Conference November 19-20 at the Santa Clara Convention Center and enter our drawing to win a free Amazon Kindle (to read ORBIS books, of course) or enter the drawing online. Staying well fed....In response to requests for more opportunities to develop a global spirituality and gather together as community in prayer, beginning in Advent and continuing throughout the new year, we will gather for Mass (if a priest is present) or Liturgy of the Word with Communion at 12:15 pm on Wednesday in our Chapel. After the liturgy there will be a potluck lunch in the Dining Room. In his book, What is the Mission of the Church, Roger Schroeder talks about the importance of table fellowship in the mission of Jesus. So, we are calling this gathering, Lunch with Jesus. Details below. Plans are beginning for several mission immersion trips next year to Cambodia, Jamaica, Peru and El Salvador, including a small group to visit Kenya and Tanzania at the end of June. If interested, contact me. We hope to see you soon.
Peace, Matt Deacon Matt Dulka Regional Director

Movie Night: Capitalism: A Love Story
Mon., Dec. 6, 6:30 pm
St. John the Baptist Meeting Room
264 Lewelling Blvd., San Lorenzo, CA 94580
In presenting a "fireball of a movie that might change your life" (Peter Travers, Rolling Stone), Moore "skewers both major political parties" (Claudia Puig, USA Today) for selling out the millions of people devastated by loss of homes and jobs to the interests of fat cat capitalists. Moore has "dug up some astonishing dirt" (Brian D. Johnson, Macleans), stories told in the faces of the foreclosed and evicted, in the food stamps received by hungry airline pilots, and in the courage of fired factory workers who refuse to go quietly. But more than a cry of despair, Moore's film raises the possibility of hope.
Economics cannot be separated from faith. Join us after the movie for a discussion of how our pocket books are connected to our call to discipleship. This movie is offered in conjunction with the St. John the Baptist Parish Faith Formation Program.

Taize Prayer Gathering
Second Wednesday of the Month
Next Gathering: Wednesday, Dec. 8th at 7:00 pm Taize is a meditative common prayer using song, chants, scripture, reflection and periods of contemplative silence, a prayer that does not end, but continues in the silence of the heart. Within this sacred space one is drawn into a deeper awareness of God's presence; it is a prayerful opportunity for self-reflection.
Contemplative prayer is seen as a critical path in mission. It is through prayer that we are connected with God and it is in the silence of our hearts that God communicates and shares with us God's mission of love for the world.
Taize will be held the second Wednesday of every month in the chapel at the Maryknoll Center at 16642 Ashland Avenue, San Lorenzo. The hour long service will start at 7:00 p.m. with Ruth Picha. Ruth is Spiritual Director who trained at Mercy Center in Burlingame. |

Session 3- 04 Prayer in Chaos, Commotion and Clutter
Are you too busy to pray? Yet do you feel a nagging need for it? Many people share the dilemma--longing for a spiritual center that gives meaning and depth to even the craziest days. Yet at the same time we know the need for prayer, we also face tremendous constraints on time. Let's take time now, in a session that will explore how prayer can occur in ordinary ways and commonplace locations--in settings where we're stressed as well as in tranquil retreats. How can springboards to prayer occur in packed schedules? How can we then help others to find the seeds of the sacred in the ordinary experience? We'll look at ways to move beyond our stereotypes of prayer, see our work as prayer, and adapt traditional prayers to contemporary settings.
Session 5- 04 Women of Mercy
We are not the first people who want to change the world; indeed, we stand in a long line of giants who have worked for justice. This presentation looks at women like Catherine of Siena, Teresa of Avila and Thea Bowman, who represent the corporal and spiritual works of mercy. In this presentation, the quality of mercy will take on new meaning-and a human face. Hear tales of bold confrontation and forgiveness transcending human limits. The art of Michael O'Neill McGrath, OSFS shows a sisterhood of hard-working women who inspire us today.
Session 6- 04 Hidden Women of the Gospels
Hidden women were there at every juncture of Jesus' life: from his conception to his resurrection. Over time, their roles may have faded, so let's re-discover their stories. Since we can't do time travel, the imagination helps us picture what Jesus' contemporaries must have been like, and how they related to him. We'll imagine the lives of women who lived at the time of Jesus using an ancient Midrash technique. Then we'll make the link to our lives: what do they teach us today? Come for reflection, surprise and a new approach to reading the gospels. |

Reflection

We still hope, remembering The voice of the dove in our land. Announcing once again that Even in bitter moments, we were Never alone. We still hope, that We will rise up and out to the Fields. To see if the plants are Flowering. If the joy has Returned. If the corn is ripe. And there You will show us Your Love. And we will show You ours.
A prayer from Mexico What is my hope?
What is my joy?
