Greetings!
Greetings!
Many people do not automatically connect contemplation and prayer with mission. However, in his encyclical on mission, Pope John Paul II clearly identified prayer and contemplation as vital paths of mission. It makes sense. Who's mission is it anyway? It's God's mission of course and prayer and contemplation are the ways in which we truly connect to God and His mission of love. With the shorter days and longer nights, the fall and winter always seem to be natural times for more introspection and prayer. To help better connect contemplation and mission, we will be offering Taize Prayer on the second Wednesday of each month starting in November and we will be holding a weekend retreat, Silent Night, An Advent Retreat to Center and Prepare for the Joy of Christmas on Dec. 3rd to 5th. More details about these and other upcoming events are below. We hope to see you soon.
Peace,
Matt

Movie Night: Food, Inc.
Mon., Nov. 1, 6:30 pm
St. John the Baptist Meeting Room
264 Lewelling Blvd., San Lorenzo, CA 94580
Food, Inc. lifts the veil on our nation's food industry, exposing how our nation's food supply is now controlled by a handful of corporations that often put profit ahead of consumer health, the livelihood of the American farmer, the safety of workers and our own environment. Food, Inc. reveals surprising truths about what we eat, how it's produced and who we have become as a nation. As we get ready for Thanksgiving and the Christmas season, with all the opportunities to gather around table, join us for this thought provoking documentary about the food we eat. Discussion to follow. This movie is offered in conjunction with the St. John the Baptist Parish Faith Formation Program.

Taize Prayer Gathering
Second Wednesday of the Month
Next Gathering: Wednesday, November 10th at 7:00 pm
Taize is a meditative common prayer using song, chants, scripture, reflection and periods of contemplative silence, a prayer that does not end, but continues in the silence of the heart. Within this sacred space one is drawn into a deeper awareness of God's presence; it is a prayerful opportunity for self-reflection.
Contemplative prayer is seen as a critical path in mission. It is through prayer that we are connected with God and it is in the silence of our hearts that God communicates and shares with us God's mission of love for the world.
Beginning on Wednesday, November 10th, Taize will be held the second Wednesday of every month in the chapel at the Maryknoll Center at 16642 Ashland Avenue, San Lorenzo. The hour long service will start at 7:00 p.m. with Ruth Picha. Ruth is Spiritual Director who trained at Mercy Center in Burlingame. |

Session 3- 04 Prayer in Chaos, Commotion and Clutter
Are you too busy to pray? Yet do you feel a nagging need for it? Many people share the dilemma--longing for a spiritual center that gives meaning and depth to even the craziest days. Yet at the same time we know the need for prayer, we also face tremendous constraints on time. Let's take time now, in a session that will explore how prayer can occur in ordinary ways and commonplace locations--in settings where we're stressed as well as in tranquil retreats. How can springboards to prayer occur in packed schedules? How can we then help others to find the seeds of the sacred in the ordinary experience? We'll look at ways to move beyond our stereotypes of prayer, see our work as prayer, and adapt traditional prayers to contemporary settings.
Session 5- 04 Women of Mercy
We are not the first people who want to change the world; indeed, we stand in a long line of giants who have worked for justice. This presentation looks at women like Catherine of Siena, Teresa of Avila and Thea Bowman, who represent the corporal and spiritual works of mercy. In this presentation, the quality of mercy will take on new meaning-and a human face. Hear tales of bold confrontation and forgiveness transcending human limits. The art of Michael O'Neill McGrath, OSFS shows a sisterhood of hard-working women who inspire us today.
Session 6- 04 Hidden Women of the Gospels
Hidden women were there at every juncture of Jesus' life: from his conception to his resurrection. Over time, their roles may have faded, so let's re-discover their stories. Since we can't do time travel, the imagination helps us picture what Jesus' contemporaries must have been like, and how they related to him. We'll imagine the lives of women who lived at the time of Jesus using an ancient Midrash technique. Then we'll make the link to our lives: what do they teach us today? Come for reflection, surprise and a new approach to reading the gospels. |

Reflection
Surely God was present not only in the few minutes officially marked as "prayer."
- Where are the seeds of the sacred sown in an ordinary day?
- Where does God make surprising breakthroughs, in disasters reversed or extraordinary kindness?
- Where does grace slash the surface of routine?
- How is the seemingly haphazard in fact sublimely patterned?
Reading the text of your life, where do you find God? Kathy Coffey
Where was God in the day?
