Greetings!
Greetings!
At our Maryknoll Affiliates meeting last night we were reflecting on how fall seems to be the season of change. We have quite a few changes in our mission promotion staff here in the west. See below for all the details.
Another major change is that the Presentation Sisters Flo, Joan and Teresa, with whom we've been sharing space here in San Lorenzo, are leaving for new living assignments at the end of the month. We will miss them very much. We will be taking over their space with the hope of offering more retreats, trainings and workshops. Planning is underway for an Advent Retreat, Dec. 3-5. More details to follow.
Our first movie of the fall season is next week. We will be celebrating the feast of the great missionary St. Francis of Assisi on October 4th with the movie Avatar. Sorry no 3D, but a great discussion will follow. See below for details.
We are offering a mission immersion trip to Montego Bay Jamaica November 9-16. Details below.
For those out in the Central Valley, we will be at the Fresno Faith Formation Conference in Visalia Oct. 8-10 with an exhibit and I'll be offering a workshop on how the Eucharist nourishes and sends out on mission to share God's love.
Next year marks the 100th anniversary of the founding of Maryknoll. We will kick off the celebrations in Honolulu on Mission Sunday (October 24th) with a mass and reception for our benefactors at the Maryknoll School Community Center. We are excited that Honolulu Bishop Larry Silva and Bishop Quinn Weitzel, MM, the Maryknoll bishop of Pago-Pago, Samoa, will be joining us.
Five new men have entered our formation program in Chicago. Please keep them in your prayers.
Peace,
Matt

Movie Night: Avatar
Monday, October 4 at 6:30 pm
St. John the Baptist Meeting Room
264 Lewelling Blvd., San Lorenzo, CA 94580
A paraplegic ex-marine finds a new life on the distant planet of Pandora, only to find himself battling humankind alongside the planet's indigenous Na'vi race in this ambitious digital 3D sci-fi epic from Academy Award-winning Titanic director James Cameron. The film, which marks Cameron's first dramatic feature since 1997's Titanic, follows Jake Sully (Sam Worthington), a war veteran who gets called to the depths of space to pick up the job of his slain twin brother for the scientific arm of a megacorporation looking to mine the planet of Pandora for a valued ore. The greatest adventure of all time.
Join us on the feast of St. Francis to watch this popular movie that raises important issues related to our interaction with the environment and relationship to indigenous people. A discussion will follow on how this movie relates to our faith.
This event is co-sponsored withe the Adult Faith Formation program at St. John the Baptist. |

Reflection

Lord,
isn't your creation wasteful?
Fruits never equal
the seedlings' abundance.
Springs scatter water.
The sun gives out
enormous light.
May your bounty teach me
greatness of heart.
May your magnificence
stop my being mean.
Seeing you a prodigal
and open-handed giver,
let me give unstintingly...
like God's own.
