We will be down at the LA Congress again this year Feb. 26th to Mar. 1st. As in the past, we'll have a drawing to sign people up for a complimentary subscription to the MARYKNOLL magazine and REVISA. Those signing up also enter a free drawing for an Acer Aspire Netbook, a very cool little laptop.
The drawing is also open to those who already receive the magazine. And, if you're not going to Congress, but still want to enter: click here. |

Greetings!
Where to begin? Change is all around. We have a new home for the Regional Offices. We're now located in the convent at St. John the Baptist in San Lorenzo. Unlike our former digs, where we used to say, "the former convent," this is actually a functioning convent. Our new roommates are three Presentation Sisters, all from Ireland, who have a combined wealth of experience in education that is beyond amazing. We're also excited about the new configuration that gives better space and access. There are pictures and directions on our website at www.maryknoll.us. Because of the move, we will not have a Mission Forum in February, but we will resume in March. On March 10th, Maryknoll Affiliate Jean Easterly will lead us in a Lenten reflection, "From the the Desert to Mission." Jean is a retired professor from Cal State and has travelled extensively, including the Holy Land. More info below.
We're also excited to have six new mission promoters working with us on a part time basis. Four of them are newly ordained deacons and their wives from the Bay Area, Clem and Gladys Chen and Herb and Peggy Casey. We'll share more about them next time. The other two are Steph Conching in Honolulu and Fr. Tom McCormick in Denver. Please see below for more information about them. In our efforts to develop more opportunities for short term mission and mission exposure trips, I'll be traveling to Singapore and Cambodia in February with Clem and Gladys Chen and Marie and I will be joining a small delegation from the San Jose Diocese to visit our joint mission project in Montego Bay, Jamaica in March. At our Mission Forums later in the Spring we'll report on our adventures and have more information about how others (you?) can participate in these programs.
Also, our Eastbay Affiliates are hosting a Reflection Day at our Los Altos Residence on Feb. 22nd beginning at 10 am. If you're curious or thinking about becoming an Affiliate, this would be a great opportuntiy to come and meet the group. Click here for more info.
Last, but not least, Kris is beginning to plan for our parish based mission appeals this summer. If you would like a Maryknoller to come to your parish to share mission stories and get people fired up about mission, contact Kris.
Wishing you peace on behalf of the Mission Team,
Matt

Fr. Tom McCormick to represent Maryknoll in Denver and the mountain states
Fr. Tom McCormick is a retired priest of the Archdiocese of Denver. In addition to parish assignments, he has been involved with a variety of other ministries. As director of Catholic Community Services-Northern, he set up social services in Ft. Collins, Loveland and Greeley Colorado. His assignments also include the experience of Campus Ministry at Colorado State University, pastor of John XXIII University Parish.
His mission experience was in Colombia and Mexico. The Archdiocese of Denver established a Mission in the diocese of Monteria-Colombia in 1979. This mission continued with rotation of other diocesan priests and a lay mission team for 15 years. Fr. McCormick was the priest-leader for the first five years of this foundation. He also started the new mission in the diocese of Hermosillo (Sonora) Mexico. Since returning to USA, a big emphasis of his ministry has been with the Latino populations in Colorado.
His attraction to work with Maryknoll comes from the desire to share the mission experiences and promote the work of the Maryknoll missioners, for whom he holds a great admiration.
Fr. Tom can be reached by phone:
303-625-3345 Local 888-444-8957 Ext. 540 Toll Free or email: tmccormick@maryknoll.org or mail: Maryknoll Fathers & Brothers c/o: St. Therese Parish 1243 Kingston St. Aurora, CO 80010

Steph Conching to represent Maryknoll in Hawaii (Pictured Steph between Frs. Marc Alexander and Joe Donovan)
For over 80 years, the Maryknoll Fathers & Brothers have been part of the Catholic Community in Hawaii. Although Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers no longer staff local parishes and schools, Maryknoll remains committed to helping Hawaii Catholics live out their baptismal call to participate in Christ's mission of bringing the Good News to the world.
Maryknoll is very pleased to announce that Stephanie Conching has been appointed as Maryknoll's mission education and promotion representative in Hawaii. Steph will be a resource to parishes and schools for mission education, and she will facilitate opportunities for the people of Hawaii to engage in mission, particularly through short term mission opportunities.
She will be available to help teachers, youth ministers and catechists better incorporate mission into their curriculum and programs and serve as the link between Maryknoll and the local church. She will be member of Maryknoll's Western Region for Mission Education and Promotion.
Steph brings a depth of experience and connection to Maryknoll. She is a teacher at Maryknoll High School, where she offers classes in performing arts and social justice through the Maryknoll charism. She also coordinates the school's short term mission program for students to go to the Marshall Islands. Steph is the Religion Education Coordinator for the Manoa-Punahou Catholic Community (Sacred Heart and St. Pius X -- Sacred Heart Parish was formerly staffed by Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers.)
Steph Conching can be reached at Sacred Heart Church, 1701 Wilder Avenue, Honolulu, HI 96822, or via phone at (808) 952-7120, or by email at honolulu@maryknoll.us.

Mission Forum:From the Desert to Mission
Tues., Mar. 10th at 7:30pm
Maryknoll Mission Center
16642 Ashland Ave.
San Lorenzo, CA 94580
You are cordially invited to participate in a Lenten Journey that transports us into a spiritual desert and away from our everyday lives. We will use visuals and our five senses to help us in reflecting upon this experience. Grounded in the heat and dust of the desert, we are ready to embrace the living water offered by Jesus to the Samaritan Woman at the Well. Just as Jesus called the Woman at the Well into relationship with Him, the Lord calls each of us. We meet Jesus at the spiritual well, where we are invited into mission.
Jean Easterly, Ed.D., has taught faith formation classes to children, youth and adults at the parish level for the past 35 years and has served as a Director of Children's Faith Formation. In 2004 she completed the Oakland Diocese's Pastoral Ministry School and has completed additional graduate courses in scripture and lay ministry at the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley. Jean has recently retired from California State University East Bay (CSUEB) after 43 years of serving the young and the old in the field of education. For the first six years of her career, she taught in elementary schools in Illinois and Arizona. During her doctoral studies, she supervised student teachers at Arizona State University. After receiving her doctorate in education from the University of Arizona, Jean taught at Oakland University in Rochester, Michigan and then served as an administrator and professor at CSUEB for the past 24 years. |
