Have a Maryknoller Visit Your Parish

Fr. Bill Boteler Joins Our Western Region Team
Fr. Bill Boteler, MM
Please join us in welcoming Fr. Bill Boteler to the Bay Area.  He will be joining our team and will be involved in a variety of mission education and promotion activities.  He will live at our residence in Los Altos.  Since he arrived a few weeks ago, he's already been busy doing mission appeals in parishes.

Fr. Boteler was born in Baltimore, MD.  He studied accounting, taught Finance, and was employed at Black and Decker as a supervisor of Data Processing. He entered the Maryknoll seminary at age 33.  After ordination, Fr. was assigned to Bolivia where he served for 16 years, eight of which he served as Pastor of San Pedro in La Paz where he founded the Family Life Center, the first for the Archdiocese and later in several other dioceses.

Following his election as Superior General of Maryknoll, Fr. Bill also served in El Salvador where he labored successfully to establish a viable parish community which had been deeply divided by the trauma of a long civil war.  Since June 2000, he has served in the U.S. in Los Angeles and Washington D.C.

Greetings!

Our community garden is producing zucchinis, Swiss chard, tomatoes, cucumbers, squash and more...a living testament to Costansia's nurturing spirit and her work in our garden.  She's home now in Mwanza and very much appreciated her Swahili/English send-off celebration.   She and her fellow Mwanza Affiliates will be staying in touch.

More sendings...our newest missionary couples, the Ottes and Helmholzes, will head to NY for orientation in September before going on mission to Africa.  We'll be sending them off on August 31st with a Mass and BBQ...see the details below.

Speaking of travel, our Maryknollers have been busy visiting parishes throughout the west doing mission appeals.   And in the fall we'll continue to take Maryknoll on the road, including a Benefactors' Day celebration in Arroyo Grande on the California Central Coast on Mission Sunday, Oct. 19th.

And back on the home front, with the elections coming up fast, we'll be welcoming Kathy McNeely from our Washington DC Office for Global Concerns to our Mission Forum on Sept. 9th at 7:30 pm at the Mission Center.  Join us for a spirited discussion.

Finally, with the beginning of school and religious education programs just around the corner, we want to remind you that we're still offering the Maryknoll Magazine free for students...delivered monthly with a poster and study guide.  Contact us if you know anyone who might be interested.

We hope that you're able to enjoy the rest of the summer, perhaps even relax with a good Orbis book at the beach...
Matt, Marie and Kris

Mission Forum:  Voting for the Common Good in a Shrinking World

Tuesday, Sept. 9th at 7:30 pm
Where: Maryknoll Center

2008 Elections Guide from MaryknollKathy McNeely of the Maryknoll Office for Global Concerns will join us for a discussion on how our faith shapes our politics...

Globalization makes us keenly aware that we are citizens of a shrinking world. Decisions and actions taken here in the U.S. have tremendous impact on people and the environment in every corner of the planet. Our Catholic social tradition stresses the call to "love our neighbors as ourselves" and to work for the common good. This means balancing our own self interest with our commitment to the greater common good. Voting responsibly means studying the candidates' statements and platforms and making decisions based on who might best bring about the best policy for everyone.

McNeely will talk about the platform for the common good developed at the July Convention for the Common Good and the Maryknoll voter reflection guide, "Loving Our Neighbor in a Shrinking World" as two of the tools that can be used to help Catholics use their faith to inform their decisions in 2008 U.S. general elections.
