HEALTHY WEIGHT MANAGEMENT

Nutrition: An Important Component for a Healthy Pet

Whether you have a young or a senior pet you've loved for years, caring for your pet properly ensures many happy years together. As you care for your pet, small precautions such as twice a year exams by your Veterinarian at Clark Animal Hospital, perfectly selected food, exercise and love - can make a big difference. We want to be a part of your pet's happy, healthy life, so we want to take this opportunity to share information on proper nutrition and healthy weight management. As you care for your pet, it's important to always keep in mind that your pet's needs change as they grow.  Clark Animal Hospital encourages you to bring in your pet regularly for weight monitoring, nutrition counseling, and general physical examinations.  Maintaining a healthy weight and preventing obesity can add many years and quality to your pets life. Diet and weight reduction are the key to ensuring that your pet lives as long and healthy a life as possible.

                         What Can I Do?
With today's advances in nutrition, weight loss and management have never been easier. Clark Animal Hospital will design a safe and effective weight loss program to meet you and your pet's lifestyle.

Encourage brisk, thirty-minute walks twice daily for exercise. Discontinue feeding table foods and treats. Instead, offer healthy snacks such as carrots, broccoli or veterinary-approved low-calorie treats.

Most pets can lose weight or maintain a healthy weight if you follow these recommendations. Weight loss in pets and humans is made up of an combination of reduced calorie intake (eating less) and increasing physical activity. The great news is that weight reduction is about 60% diet and 40% exercise. Weight loss is often a matter of diligence and persistence. Remember that the reason you are doing this is to help your pet live as long and healthy a life as possible. Who knows, you both may benefit from this diet! Once your pet has been overweight, they may be prone to weight gain and should have an ongoing weight-management plan based on good nutrition, exercise and regular check-ups and weigh-ins. For an accurate diagnosis and treatment options, always consult your veterinarian or staff at Clark Animal Hospital.

For Dogs:

Slentrol is a great new weight loss medication for dogs.  Its a oral liquid medication that is given once a day for up to 6 months, most pet's reach their goal weight within 3-4 months.

When starting Slentrol it is required that you begin a diet food during this process because the dog needs to be on a weight-loss diet program to keep the weight off after Slentrol is stopped.
