Yearly Wellness Testing

blossom2What is Wellness Testing?   Wellness testing is a term given to a group of tests that are performed specifically to confirm that your pet's organs are functioning properly and to reveal any hidden health conditions that could put your pet at risk.  Even if your pet's blood reports come back within normal range, these tests can provide a baseline level values and become part of his or her medical record for future reference.

 Why do Wellness Testing?
Unfortunatly, pets can not tell us when they are not feeling well.  In many cases owner's  do not realise their pet is having a problem since symptoms for various disease do not show up until the later stages of disease.  For example, a pet can lose up to 75% of kidney function before showing any visible signs of illness.  Testing helps your veterinarian see everything that can not be seen in a physical exam.  If a disease is found in its early stages, there are other steps that can be taken to manage or correct the problem before permenant damage is done.

How often should Wellness Testing be done?
It is highly recommended that wellness blood testing be done at least once-a-year.  For your convenience testing can be performed at the same time as your pet's routine annual exam.  Since pets age much faster than humans, alot of changes can happen in one year.  On average every two months for a pet is the equivilant of one year for a  human. Monitoring your pets health status on a regular basis can help your veterinarion detect minor changes that signal the on set of disease.  Your pet's veterinarian may recommend more frequent testing based on your pet's specific health concerns.

What does Wellness Testing look for?
There are four main categoris of wellness testing:

1. Complete Blood Count (CBC)
This component of your pet's testing is checking the cellular components in your pets bloodstream.  The main components include: red blood cells, which carry oxygen to the tissues, white blood cells, which which fight infection and respond to inflammation, and platelets, which help the blood to clot.  A complete blood count will also provide details about the number, size and shape of various cells and identifies the presence of any abnormal cells.

2. Biochemistry Profile
Tests involved in this portion of screening provide information about how well the various organs of the body are working and check for the presence of some metabolic diseases.  Some of the main organs assessed include the liver, kidneys,  pancreas and also checks for diabetes.  Depending on the results of your pet's biochemistry profile your veterinarian might recommend further, more specific testing such as x-rays or ultrasound.

3. Urinalysis
This test involves an analysis of the chemical components in your pets urine, as well as a microscopic examination of the cells and solid material present in urine.   Urinalysis provides a more detailed report of how well the kidneys are working, identifies the presence of inflamation or infection, identifies the presence of some urinary crystals and may detect the presence of underlying metabolic disease such as diabetes.

4. Thyroid Testing
The thyroid gland sets the metabolic rate of the whole body.  Some symptoms of thyroid malfunction include unexplained weight gain or loss, lack of energy, recurring skin or ear infections, or hair loss on the body and tail.

Summary
Wellness testing is a simple and effective way of monitoring your pet's health.  Early detection and correction of medical problems help to ensure that your pet will have a long, healthy, and active life.

Blood Testing Saved My Life - A patient's true storyrudy

Hello,
My name is Rudy, and I am a healthy looking long haired cat.  A few weeks ago I was seen at my veterinarian's office for my yearly physical and wellness blood testing.  My mom, who works at vet's office thought I was doing fine and unfortunately since I don't speak human, I couldn't tell my mom that I didn't feel well.  Mom had noticed that I had lost a little weight but she assumed that it was because of the new low calorie diet food she had been giving me (I admit I was a previously little over-weight).

After my blood test results came in my mom was devastated to find out that I am a diabetic.  It is a bit uncommon for a cat my age to have diabetes (I'm only 5 years old), it was a huge surprise to my mom.  My glucose levels were very high and my doctors were even surprised that my body wasn't showing more severe symptoms.  Without my wellness blood testing I probably would have never made it through the weekend because no one knew I was sick but me.

I am my mom's best friend and the thought of loosing me would  break her heart. I recieve insulin medication twice a day now and I am on a strict diet.  My medicine aids in  keeping me healthy and helps prevent my disease from getting worse, and I feel great!  Now that my mom knows I have a medical problem she is extra careful and brings me to my veterinarian often for monitoring.  I am very happy my mom followed my doctor's recommendation and had my wellness testing done that day, it saved my life.

**4th of July Safety Tips**
Around the 4th of July, more animals are lost than at any other time of the year.  Fireworks can be very frightning to some pets due to their hightened sense of hearing. To protect your pet this 4th of July,  take the following precautions to make sure this holiday is  a great one for both of you!

Identification  It is very important that your pet is wearing a collar with current ID tags with your contact information, even if they rarely go out. Internal identification microchips are also very helpful and highly recommended as backup in case your pet's collar comes off; most shelters have scanners that read these microchips which helps to reunite you with your pet promptly. Clark Animal Hospital implants ID microchip for a nominal fee.

Supervise Your Pet  Even if your pet is in a fenced yard or on a chain it is still not wise to leave them alone.  When pets are afraid they may do things they normally don't do like, escape and become lost, or they can might become entangled in their chain, which can lead to injury or even death.

Keep Your Pet Relaxed  Keep your pet in a quiet area. Some animals can become destructive when they are frightened.  Make sure you keep your pet confined to a smaller space and remove any items that could be destroyed or that would be harmful to your pet if chewed. Play soothing music or turn the TV on to a "pet friendly" station. This will help mask the sounds from outside and keep your pet calm and happy while you are gone.

Do Not Leave Your Pet In The Car  The heat that accumulates in a car can result in very high temperatures.  If your pet is left with only this hot air to breath your animal can suffer from very serious health effects, even death, within a few short minutes.

SEDATIVES FOR YOUR PETS:    If your pet becomes easly stressed out by either loud noises, travel, vet visits, storms, or fireworks there are some medications, such as light tranquillizers, that your veterinarians at the Clark Animal Hospital can prescribe to help alleviate pets' fear and anxiety.  We will be happy to choose the right medication for your pet.
