Exhibition of Kashmir Shawls at The Textile Museum

Fashionably Wrapped:  The Influence of Kashmir Shawls

Nov 18, 2009 - May 30, 2010

This exhibition traces the origins of the shawl from the noble courts of India, where finely woven pieces were made and worn for several centuries, to the high-fashion market in Europe, where shawls were desired for their unusual beauty and exquisite weaving. With 33 beautiful examples from the Textile Museum's permanent collection, the exhibition will examine how in Europe the shawl became a symbol of femininity, integrating the romantic exoticism of the 18th century with the Victorian values of innocence and decency of the mid 19th century. With their warm colours and luxurious softness, the Kashmir shawl and its European imitations embody a cross cultural phenomenon with roots in India but identified with France and Great Britain

Municipal Elections - October 25, 2010

Monday October 25, 2010 may seem like a long, long way off, but candidates are already registering to run in Ward 26 and they all want your vote!

If you are a Canadian Citizen, over 18 years of age, and live in Ward 26 (see map), you are eligible to vote.

Regardless of who you decide to support, I encourage you to get involved in this year's municipal elections.  Your municipal representative is the one responsible for the things that you use in your daily life - roads, garbage, rental housing standards, parks & recreation, snow removal, etc.

jon burnside for city council in ward 26This year, I have decided to support Jon Burnside for city council.  Jon grew up in Leaside and has been active in the community life of Ward 26 for over 20 years.  From coaching youth sports teams in hockey (Flemingdon Park), soccer (Thorncliffe Park), and baseball (Leaside), to volunteering with the Community Share Food Bank to protecting the welfare of animals, his commitment to contributing to the quality of life for residents has been unwavering and consistent.  His 10 years as a police officer with the Toronto Police, working in the Ward 26 neighbourhoods, gives him a unique perspective on community safety and what can be done to create a positive living environment for everyone.  Thinking back to when I was young and playing on community baseball, soccer, and badminton teams, I'm grateful for the adults who took the time to provide the sports opportunities in my neighbourhood.  Jon reminds me of those adults - someone who is dedicated, sincere, and passionate about community involvement and about the importance of providing opportunities for our youth.  If you have any questions about Jon, or about the municipal elections, please don't hesitate to contact me, satinder@fastmail.fm, 416-805-5736.

And above all, remember to vote on Monday October 25, 2010 !
