Microfinance in Toronto

Many of us are aware of microfinance programs that give small loans to people in other parts of the world like India, Africa, South America, etc.  to help them develop businesses and thus become self-sufficient and improve their standard of living.   Microfinance is a proven methodology based on the principles of self-help and free enterprise for empowering people living in poverty by granting small loans.

But, did you also know that there are organizations in Toronto that operate microfinance programs for Toronto residents?  The two organizations are Access Community Capital Fund and Alterna Savings.  If you have a business or business idea and need a small loan to get it off the ground or to keep it operating or to expand it, you may qualify for their programs.  You apply directly to them; you don't need to go through any agency or other office.

The ACCESS Community Capital Fund assists small and emerging businesses in the GTA gain access to financing when it is not available through conventional sources.  The borrower may have no credit history in Canada, or a poor credit record due to unemployment, illness or unforeseen life events.  Loans are given using a character-based lending decision and according to your business plan needs.  For more information or to get started:
Tel:  416-462-0496
Website:  www.accessccf.com

Alterna's Community Micro-Loan Program grants loans ranging from $1,000 to $15,000 to qualified borrowers.  They place a greater emphasis on an individual's character, commitment, and ability than do the larger financial institutions.  They do this because they know that a micro-loan can help a less advantaged individual who has entrepreneurial aspirations to become economically and socially empowered.   For more information or to get started, contact your GTA Community Micro-Loan Coordinator at Alterna Savings, 416-252-5621.   Alterna Website

In November 2009, I helped organize the first Toronto Microfinance Conference.  The organizing committee is now busy planning the 2nd Toronto Microfinance Conference which will be held in the fall of 2010.  If you would like to stay informed about the conference and related microfinance topics, please visit our website and join our mailing list.
