Coming up on May 23, we are discussing a novel by Muriel Barbery, entitled The Elegance of the Hedgehog.    Member Joyce S. recommended this book, originally published in Europe in 2006 and then later translated into English;  the novel captures  the observations of a middle-aged French concierge and a troubBook Cover - The Elegance of the Hedgehogled 12-year old girl.  The B&N synopsis notes the this book is:  "A moving, funny, triumphant novel that exalts the quiet victories of the inconspicuous among us."

 

Moroccan-born author Barbery was raised in France and is currently a professor of philosophy.  More about Barbery, including interviews, book club ideas, and information on her other works, is available at her fan-created website:  click for www.murielbarbery.com  .   

 

Side Note:  Two of the books we've enjoyed from our Reading List have recently been made into movies:  Sarah Gruen's Water for Elephants , starring Robert Pattinson and Reese Witherspoon, opened last month (click here for information about the film).
