Soon, on September 27, we'll meet to discuss The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, a novel by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows. See the detailed writeup below, for some background on the novel, written as an exchange of letters among friends (old and new) just as WWII has ended.  This book was proposed by our intrepid Jean K., so we're bound to have a lively discussion on the 27th.

September's back-to-school events and the promise of slightly cooler fall weather always spark a renewed interest in books and reading in the Bay area.  Local reading festivals in the next few weeks include the St. Pete Times Festival of Reading and, on the East Coast, St. Augustine's Florida Heritage Book Festival--dates, times, and other particulars are provided below.

You know me and my electronic gadgets!  I found a "BBC World Book Club" podcast that I listened to on my I-Pod:  Spanish author Carols Ruiz Zafon discussing, in his own charming and warm accented voice, his novel The Shadow of the Wind, our recent selection from May 2010.   CLICK here to listen now to the Zafon interview and to learn how to get the World Book Club programs in the future. I can't wait for the next interviewee:  Barbara Kingsolver, another of "our" authors, is slated to be interviewed in early October.

In our own back yard, the Women Author's Book Club of the CCC, led by Debbie Doliner, sponsors a "don't miss" event on October 4th, featuring first-time novelist and USF Professor Sheramy Bundrick discussing her book, Sunflowers:  A Novel of Vincent Van Gogh. For more information, see details below/right, or go to www.sheramybundrick.com

Regarding our Club's Proposed Book List I ask that you review it and let me know your own nominations. Send me an email, or call me (813) 416-8453), or see me before or after a meeting, and I I would be happy to add your book to the list.

I hope to see you at the discussion meeting on September 27th,
Kathy S. Smith

September 27th

September's book selection is the popular Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, by novelist Mary Ann Shaffer.  Jean K. recommended this book, which is set on the Channel Island of Guernsey just after the end of the German occupation during the mid-1940's.

The following links provide background information about the novel, the authors, and the island itself:

Next up, on October 25. we're slated to discuss Kathryn Stockett's debut novel, The Help, set in Mississippi in the early 1960's.

The B&N site synopsis quotes Sybil Steinberg of the Washington Post:  "In a page-turner that brings new resonance to the moral issues involved, she [Stockett] spins a story of social awakening as seen from both sides of the American racial divide."

Thanks to Kelley F. for recommending this novel.
