Happy Spring (at last) to one and all.  I hope you are enjoying some warm sunshine and some good books...including our April selection, The Echo Maker, by Richard Powers.  We'll meet this Monday, April 26, to discuss this National Book Award winner; see below to read some background information about the book, the author, and the neurological disorder called "Capgras syndrome," which is a central element in Powers' novel.

Below, you'll find some details about the innovative PaperbackSwap.com website that Kelley F. introduced us to at our last meeting.  And finally, I wanted to focus again on our own Club's Proposed Book List and ask that you review it and let me know your own nominations.

See you Monday night,
Kathy S. Smith

April 26

Our novel for April, recommended by CCC Book Club member Jedd P., is a 2006 National Book Award winner by Richard Powers. The focus of the novel is on Mark Schluter, a Nebraskan in his mid-20's who has a serious accident in his truck one night and is then diagnosed with a rare neurological disorder called "Capgras Syndrome."

May 24

Next up, on May 24, we'll discuss a novel that has been wildly popular in Spain and has been translated into English.
The B&N website provides this backdrop:

"Barcelona, 1945-just after the war, a great world city lies in shadow, nursing its wounds, and a boy named Daniel awakes on his eleventh birthday to find that he can no longer remember his mother's face."

The author, Carlos Ruiz Zafon, has been compared to Dan Brown, and the novel's popularity set off a phenomenon known as "Zafón-mania." Thanks to Ray O. for this recommendation!

Paperback Swap
An Inexpensive, Environmentally Friendly, and Easy Way to Read

At our last meeting, Kelley F. told us about an innovative website that she uses to trade books online.  The website is called PaperbackSwap.com. Based on a system of "credits," members of this online group of book traders list their own paperbacks to "earn" credits, and "spend" credits when they request someone else's book. The only cost is for postage--and the website creators have made it easy to print postage and sheets of paper "mailers," too!  Thanks, Kelley, for sharing this site with us.
Our Proposed Book List

For new and old members alike, please be aware that our Proposed Book List is online and available by clicking This Link. We will continue to add proposed books, so the list will grow and change over time; please refer to it often, at your leisure, to become familiar with the nominations and prepare for the voting night at year's end.  We'll use this list to vote on our book selections for the upcoming year's official 2011 Reading List.

We want your recommendations!  We ask only that you have read, already,
any book you propose, and that you be willing to lead the discussion meeting if your book is voted in. Oh:  We try to avoid books that are patently political or religious in nature.

To nominate a Proposed Book, please email me, or call me at 813-416-8453, or see me at any Monday night meeting.  Thank you.
